AORUS 5 (2020) vs AORUS 5 (2019) – more GPU options for the new device

Last year’s Aorus 5 is a bit of a mixed bag. It has a high refresh rate display but its top GPU variant is the GTX 1650 – nothing bad about it but with a 144Hz display you’ll definitely need something more powerful. This drawback is already fixed in the 2020 model and you can go up to RTX 2060 which is a much better option for a panel like that.

Apart from the better GPU options, the new laptop comes with the 10th gen Intel CPUs, updated design, faster memory support, and three storage ports. Sounds decent, let’s check the new things in a bit more detail.

Design: slightly updated exterior but with a thicker profile

The lid of AORUS 5 (2020) has a clean design, without the two convex details below the AORUS logo that present in the 2019 model. On the backside, we can spot some ports and two exhaust vents. Additionally, there is another exhaust vent on the right side of the laptop – it seems that the new device boasts a bigger (and perhaps better) cooling solution and that leads to a bit thicker profile – 27.9 mm. Interestingly, the weight is almost unchanged – 2.2 kg.

Display: a 144Hz panel for all

Just like the 2019 model, the new AORUS 5 has a 144Hz display. It’s an IPS panel with 5ms response time (manufacturer’s specs). There are no other display options but this one seems good enough for playing games and any other daily activities that you’re doing in front of the laptop.

Hardware: Intel Core i7-10750H and some RTX and GTX GPUs

There is only one CPU option but for a normal gaming laptop, it’s ok. This is the i7-10750H that has 6 cores, 12 threads, 2.60 GHz base frequency, 5.0 GHz turbo clock, 12MB cache size, and a 45W TDP. It’s a refreshed version of the well-know Core i7-9750H but with a slightly bumped clock speeds and higher max supported memory frequencies – 2933MHz.

Unlike the CPU “variety”, you can choose between three GPU options – NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060, GTX 1660 Ti, and GTX 1650 Ti. The latter is one of the latest GPUs that already debuted this year alongside the RTX Super siblings.

Perhaps Gigabyte has implemented a new cooling and that explains the added side vents and a bit thicker profile – if the laptop is cool and quiet under load, why not?

Connectivity and ports: good port selection for a modest gaming laptop

For that kind of a price, the I/O is pretty much great – a USB 2.0 (Type-A), a USB 3.2 Gen1 (Type-A), a USB 3.2 Gen2 (Type-A), an HDMI 2.0 port, one Mini DisplayPort 1.2, one USB 3.2 Gen 2 (Type-C), that supports DisplayPort output, an audio combo jack, a mic-in jack, an SD Card Reader, and an Ethernet port.

Storage and other specs: backlit keyboard, three storage ports, Wi-Fi 6

The AORUS 5 (2020) features two M.2 slots and a single SATA port. So, you can install your games and programs on the fast NVMe drives for faster loading and if you add a big SATA drive it can be used for movie and music collections storage (just an example). If you like to play games during night time, the backlit keyboard can become a pretty useful option. And If your router supports Wi-Fi 6, you can download files faster without additional cables plugged into the laptop.
