ASUS ROG STRIX SCAR 15 (G532) vs ASUS ROG G531 (SCAR III / Hero III) – NVIDIA RTX Super therapy for the 2020 model

It looks like the ASUS ROG STRIX SCAR 15 (G532) is a decent upgrade over the 2019 model. While it lacks the RTX 2080 Super option the RTX 2070 Super is a fast and capable GPU too. The 2020 version brings some fresh features over its predecessor like the more powerful Intel Comet Lake-H processors and faster DDR4 RAM support. The 2.5″ storage bay is history and its place has been occupied by three M.2 slots – a very rare sight, honestly. Moreover, there is a nice bump in terms of screen options but we will talk about that in a bit.

Design: typical ASUS gaming design

Like many other 2020 ASUS machines, this one has the same design as the 2019 variant. The profile and the weight are acceptable for a laptop that can be configured with an overclockable 8-core CPU and a full-blown RTX 2070 Super – 26 mm and 2.57 kg.

Display: two panel options with 240Hz and 300Hz refresh rate

Gamers would probably be very happy because the G532 comes with two great IPS Full HD screens – both with 3ms response time and full coverage of the sRGB gamut. The first one is a 240Hz display which looks like it’s going to be enough for the majority of players but if you want more, there is a 300Hz optional panel that is suitable for competitive play and esports.

Hardware: Intel Core i9-10980HK and a full-blown RTX 2070 Super

If you get the 300Hz panel it’ll be a good idea to pick the top GPU option which is the RTX 2070 Super. The latter is completely unleashed because of the ROG boost and it has a core clock of 1540 MHz and a 115W TGP. Still, if this RTX Super video card is too much for your needs you can choose between the regular RTX 2070 or RTX 2060, which comes with 6GB GDDR6 memory.

As of the CPUs, the 8-core i9-10980HK (with unlocked multiplayer) sits right on the top of the CPU options. A bit down below, you can find the Core i7-10875H which lacks the overclockability but it has the same amount of cores and threads and it’ll certainly bring the end-price down.

Connectivity and ports: nice amount of ports

The I/O is as follows – a USB 3.2 Gen 2 (Type-C) with DisplayPort 1.4 capabilities, three USB 3.2 Gen 1 (Type‑A), an HDMI 2.0b, an audio combo jack, and an RJ-45 connector.

Storage and other specs: 3xM.2 slots with RAID support and a backlit RGB keyboard

As we mentioned at the beginning of this article, the 2020 variant comes with three NVMe slots and you can use two of them in RAID 0. In addition, Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0 are expectedly part of the whole package. The backlit chiclet keyboard is AURA compatible and it will be a useful extra if you tend to play games in a dimmed room.
