When it comes to mobile gaming the Ampere GPUs are on the top of the food chain. But if you haven’t noticed, Turing-based laptops are still on the market. Sure, they aren’t the newest (ergo, latest and greatest tech) products but in terms of pure performance, most of them are just fine. And because of the Ampere video cards, you can find some good deals with discounted Turing notebooks.
That’s why we decided to show the performance of two Turing chips that are still very capable when it comes to gaming. We are talking about the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 and GeForce GTX 1660 Ti. These are full-blow versions fitted in laptops with good cooling solutions so perhaps we’re about to squeeze every possible FPS out of them.

Specs overview
RTX 2070 and GTX 1660 Ti are Turing GPUs. The RTX 2070 has a TU106 chip as for the GTX 1660 Ti – TU116.
TU106 is e real beast when it is compared to TU116 – 64 ROPs, 8GB GDDR6 memory size, 256-bit memory bus. The GeForce RTX 2070 has the following core frequencies – 1215 MHz to 1485 MHz. Its TGP is a higher – 115W but that’s fine because it is a more powerful GPU and it needs more “space to play”.
The GeForce GTX 1660 Ti is the most powerful Turing non-RTX video card. It has 6GB of video memory (GDDR6), a 192-bit memory bus, 1536 shaders, 48 ROPs, and 80W TGP. The memory clock is 12000 MHz. For the GPU side, we have a base clock of 1455 Mhz and a 1590 MHz boost.
Ok, enough talking, let’s go straight to our benchmarks.

Verdict
If the money is not a problem a laptop with RTX 2070 will be a good choice – it will be a powerful machine with RTX capabilities that will do the job just okay if you want to play new gaming titles and it will be good for future ones too because of the 8GB of video memory. The RTX 2070 is still suitable for high refresh rate monitors – maybe you have to turn the settings from Ultra to Very High but this will not impact the visual quality that much.
The RTX 1660 Ti is a strong midfielder – it can run almost every new game on Ultra preset with over 30 FPS and if you turn down a bit the visual quality you can reach easily the 60 FPS mark. For most people that is enough. We can call the TU116 “the smart choice” in this comparison – you can enjoy good visuals at a much lower price compared to notebooks with RTX 2070.
The RTX 2070 and GTX 1660 Ti are two very different GPU. We can’t call either of the two “a winner” because they are targeted in very different price categories. The TU106 is still a fast GPU, it is for people who demand high FPS in every game combined with max visual quality – this pleasure is a costly one. The TU116 is a smart choice – with GTX 1660 Ti you can use Max settings too but FPS will be lower (over 30, which is fine). The key selling point here is the price/performance ratio – TU116 based machines have a more affordable price and more people can buy them and enjoy the new games like AC Odyssey or Shadow Of The Tomb Raider without breaking the bank.
