ASUS Zenbook Pro 15 Flip OLED (UP6502) – Top 5 Pros and Cons

High-end convertibles have no room for error, as they have to provide the same functionality as their clamshell counterparts, but also execute the convertible aspect flawlessly. The ZenBook Pro 15 Flip OLED (UP6502) is a powerful machine, harnessing the Alder Lake H-series processor, as well as offering Arc discrete graphics. Intel’s GPUs are a touchy subject. Prices keep going down for their desktop counterparts, to make them more appealing, however, the driver issues are still keeping consumers away from them. However, don’t let that keep you away from the ZenBook, which has many appealing qualities.

Today we’re giving you a quick overview of the ASUS Zenbook Pro 15 Flip OLED (UP6502).

ASUS Zenbook Pro 15 Flip OLED (UP6502): Full Specs / In-depth Review

3 reasons to BUY the ASUS Zenbook Pro 15 Flip OLED (UP6502)

1. Design and build quality

Zenbooks have always utilized premium materials. The Pro 15 Flip OLED has a full-metal body, which is rigid and feels good to the touch. Design-wise, the lid, and base have a stepped edge, with the one on the base being covered in silver, the same as the hinges giving the laptop some bling. The lid has a circular brushed finish, which centers around an ASUS logo. For a 15.6-inch machine, it’s portable, with a weight of only 1.80 kg and a profile of 18.9 mm. However, for a convertible, we feel like it’s a bit too heavy to be used as a tablet.

The lid opens easily with one hand, and still carries an ErgoLift mechanism, despite the convertible form factor. The display is surrounded by thin bezels, which carry an HD webcam and an IR sensor for facial recognition. The Gorilla Glass cover above the display also improves durability and flex-resistance. Moving to the base, we have a full-sized keyboard with a NumPad and a backlit. It’s great for typing, squeezing out as much key travel as possible, despite the thin profile, while offering clicky feedback. The touchpad has an interesting hydrophobic coating that prevents the buildup of smudges, dirt, and fingerprints, however, it’s not flawless, as sometimes you will see a fingerprint or two.

2. Display quality

The 15.6-inch OLED panel has a 2.8K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. It feels very smooth even under general use, as the response times are wickedly quick, at just 3ms. There is some PWM usage below 80 nits, however, the MyASUS app does include a Flicker-Free Dimming toggle, which eliminates the issue. Other than that, the panel is great, with a peak brightness of 373 nits, 100% sRGB, and 100% DCI-P3 coverage.

The panel has very accurate colors out of the box, with a dE value of 1.2 in both the sRGB and DCI-P3 gamuts. If you decide to use the Flicker-Free Dimming option, the accuracy isn’t affected that much, as it still achieves a dE value of 1.6.

Office Work

Office Work should be used mostly by users who spend most of the time looking at pieces of text, tables or just surfing. This profile aims to deliver better distinctness and clarity by keeping a flat gamma curve (2.20), native color temperature and perceptually accurate colors.

Design and Gaming

This profile is aimed at designers who work with colors professionally, and for games and movies as well. Design and Gaming takes display panels to their limits, making them as accurate as possible in the sRGB IEC61966-2-1 standard for Web and HDTV, at white point D65.

Health-Guard

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate. Health-Guard simulates paper so the pressure on the eyes is greatly reduced.

3. Battery life

There is a massive 96Wh battery pack, which lasts for 12 hours and 37 minutes of Web browsing, or 11 hours and 7 minutes of video playback. Now, we conduct the battery tests with the Windows Better performance setting turned on, screen brightness adjusted to 120 nits and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with.

2 reasons NOT to buy the ASUS Zenbook Pro 15 Flip OLED (UP6502)

1. Upgradeability

The upgradeability of the Zenbook is next to non-existent, with soldered LPDDR5 memory, of which you can get only 16GB. You can only access the storage, through one M.2 slot for Gen 4 SSDs.

Here is our detailed teardown video, which shows the insides of the notebook.

2. GPU performance

We did a full breakdown of gaming on the Arc A370M, which shows that Intel still needs to work on improving the drivers. Some later updates supposedly improve the performance in DX9 games, utilizing a translation layer, similar to the one that Valve uses for its SteamOS to make gaming on Linux and their Steam Deck more pleasant. Inside the ZenBook, the A370M performs worse than the RTX 3050 and 3050 Ti.

The Arc A370M has a max TGP of 50W, but here, we don’t nearly to that, as the GPU maintains a sub-30W power limit, during both short and long loads. On the other hand, the clock speeds are high and the temperatures are low.
