HP Elite Dragonfly G3 – Top 5 Pros and Cons

Premium laptops are currently overtaken by Dell’s XPS series and Lenovo’s ThinkPad, however, HP wants to change that with the Elite Dragonfly G3, a portable and well-equipped machine with Alder Lake U-series processors and a selection of 3:2 displays that are perfectly suitable for professional Creator work. While the laptop loses its convertible functionality, it retains the touchscreen display, which is a weird move, to say the least.

Today we’re giving you a quick overview of the HP Elite Dragonfly G3.

HP Elite Dragonfly G3: Full Specs / In-depth Review

4 reasons to BUY the HP Elite Dragonfly G3

1. Input devices

The base houses a surprisingly good keyboard with pretty large keycaps, long key travel, and clicky feedback, despite there not being much room in terms of thickness to work with, as the laptop measures just 16.25 mm. The keys are backlit as well, featuring a fingerprint reader in one key next to the arrow keys. The touchpad has a large size, a smooth surface, and accurate tracking. It also sports a silver bezel around it.

2. Display quality

The 3:2 display has a resolution of 1920 x 1280p. Its viewing angles are excellent, while the SureView reflect feature can narrow them down on purpose, in order to prevent others from seeing what you’re working on. The panel reaches a high peak brightness of 361 nits, with a contrast ratio of 1640:1, which means that blacks look good and dark. There’s 96% sRGB and 78% DCI-P3 coverage, which means the display is ready for creator work.

Taking a look at the accuracy, the stock settings of the panel give us a dE value of 2.8, which isn’t ideal. For that reason, we have our Design and Gaming profile, which improves it and lowers it down to 1.0, which is just right. Here are the results of our test with the stock settings (left) and with our profile applied (right).

Praca biurowa

Projektowanie i gry

Health-Guard

3. Battery life

The 68.4Wh battery lasts for 14 hours and 27 minutes of Web browsing, or 13 hours and 6 minutes of video playback. Now, we conduct the battery tests with the Windows Better performance setting turned on, screen brightness adjusted to 120 nits and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with.

4. I/O

The port selection of the Dragonfly G3 comes with two Thunderbolt 4 ports, one jawed USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, an HDMI 2.0b port, a SIMcard tray, and an audio jack.

1 reason NOT to buy the HP Elite Dragonfly G3

1. Upgradeability

The upgradeability of the laptop doesn’t inspire confidence, with up to 32GB of soldered LPDDR5 memory. It works at 4800MHz. For storage, there’s one M.2 slot that fits Gen 4 SSDs.

Here is our teardown video, which shows how to access the single SSD slot.
