Lenovo V17 Gen 2 – Top 5 Pros and Cons

The term “budget laptop” has been thrown around here and there, but we feel like there are only a few devices that embody the values and characteristics of a truly budget laptop.

One of them is the IdeaPad 3 series from Lenovo, which brings very good value for money hardware and design. Lenovo decided to try and one-up themselves, resulting in a less expensive laptop, that still offers decent hardware and more.

Today we present you with LaptopMedia’s top 5 picks about the Lenovo V17 Gen 2.

Lenovo V17 Gen 2: Full Specs / In-depth Review

4 reasons to BUY the Lenovo V17 Gen 2

1. Upgradeability

The laptop’s upgradeability isn’t perfect, but it does come with a good port selection. Once you open up the device, you can see half of the RAM being soldered, along with a single SODIMM RAM slot. In terms of storage, there is one M.2 PCIe x4 slot and space for a 2.5-inch SATA drive.

Here is our teardown video, which shows how to access all the slots on the laptop.

2. Display quality

There are two display options, with a 1600 x 900p TN panel, which you should just skip because the Full HD IPS option that we see here is fantastic. It comes with comfortable viewing angles, a max brightness of 356 nits in the middle of the screen, 334 nits as an average for the whole area, a maximum deviation of 8%, and a 1230:1 contrast ratio. The more interesting thing is the 97% sRGB coverage, which makes the laptop excellent for Creativity.

This is further established with the color accuracy, as our Design and Gaming profile does a really good job at getting the colors in order, reaching a dE value of 1.1. Here are the results of our test with the stock settings (left) and with our profile applied (right).

Praca biurowa

Projektowanie i gry

Health-Guard

3. Battery life

The laptop is powered by a 45Wh battery pack, which lasts for 8 hours and 45 minutes of Web browsing, or 6 hours and 57 minutes of video playback. Now, we conduct the battery tests with the Windows Better performance setting turned on, screen brightness adjusted to 120 nits, and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with.

4. I/O

The I/O on the laptop sports a single USB 2.0 port, a Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, and a Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 1) port. Next, we have an HDMI 1.4 port, an SD card reader, and a 3.5 mm audio jack.

1 reason NOT to buy the Lenovo V17 Gen 2

1. Design and build quality

The plastic chassis on the design isn’t one of the strongest that we have tested, not by a long shot. The lid and base twist and flex significantly. Thankfully, the dimensions are portable enough to justify it, as the device has a weight of 2.20 kg and a thin profile of 19.9 mm. The lid also doesn’t open with one hand.
