Acer Nitro 5 (AN515-57): Full Specs / In-depth Review

3 reasons to BUY the Acer Nitro 5 (AN515-57)

1. Input devices

The keyboard here is of good quality. It has large keycaps, including a NumPad, making it comfortable for both gaming and typing. Furthermore, the package includes long key travel and clicky feedback. The keyboard also includes a backlight, which glows in Red, with there not being an RGB option. The WASD and Arrow keys are also highlighted in Red. The touchpad has a large size and smooth gliding, but it could have been more accurate. All in all, this is a good setup for the money.

2. Upgradeability

The laptop offers a very high degree of upgradeability. There are two SODIMM slots, which can handle up to 32GB of DDR4 RAM running at 3200MHz. Storage-wise, you get two M.2 PCIe slots, with RAID 0 support, with an additional 2.5-inch SATA drive bay.

Here is our detailed teardown video, which shows how to access both the RAM and SSD slots.

3. Display quality

The 15.6-inch IPS display that is used here is far from the best, but it is more than suitable for gaming, especially on a budget device. It comes with an FHD resolution, comfortable viewing angles, a maximum brightness of 306 nits in the middle of the screen, and 278 nits as an average for the whole area, with a maximum deviation of 14%. The panel is PWM-free, meaning that it is usable for prolonged periods of time, while the 144Hz refresh rate will deliver smooth gameplay.

In terms of color coverage, the panel covers only 57% of the sRGB color gamut.

Moving over to the color accuracy, the unit delivers similar dE values both with the factory settings (left) and with our Design and Gaming profile applied (right).

Praca biurowa

Projektowanie i gry

Health-Guard

2 reasons NOT to buy the Acer Nitro 5 (AN515-57)

1. Battery life

The budget nature of the laptop is seen when we take a look at the battery unit, which has a size of 57Wh. Its results aren’t perfect either, with the laptop lasting for 2 hours and 34 minutes of Web browsing and 2 hours and 38 minutes of videos and that’s a disappointing result. Now, we conduct the battery tests with Windows Better performance setting turned on, screen brightness adjusted to 120 nits, and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with.

2. Design and build quality

At this point, Acer should invest some money into creating a new design for its Nitro laptops. The laptop does look outdated, with the red accents on the lid and aggressive lines. Overall, it looks too gamer-y, in a world where minimalism is currently the trend. We are not saying that they should completely scrap the gamer aesthetic, but we are sure they can find a new and interesting way to embrace it. Built entirely from plastic, it does have some bends and creaks to it, but it is nothing to worry about.
