The MSI Sword 17 HX B14V Becomes a Top Creator Laptop With a Quick Tune Up From Our Display Profiles (dE of 1.0)

The MSI Sword laptops aren’t your measly budget gaming devices anymore. Thanks to the hike in prices, the Sword is now much closer, or might we say well within the mid-range, especially once you go with a higher-powered configuration. There’s only one CPU, the Core i7-14700HX, which is a powerhouse processor for more than just gaming. You can back it up with up to an RTX 4070, so gaming prowess can be ensured.

One of the main stars of the Sword 17 is the display, a gorgeous 17-inch QHD+ IPS panel with a 240Hz refresh rate, high brightness of up to 452 nits, and a decent contrast ratio of 1080:1, ensuring relatively deep blacks. However, the real kicker is the color coverage and accuracy.

MSI Sword 17 HX B14V: Full Specs / In-depth Review

Display quality

In terms of color coverage, the display of the Sword 17 is like no other. It covers 100% of the sRGB and 100% of the DCI-P3 color gamuts, ensuring rich, deep, and vibrant colors. You can also switch between color gamuts through the MSI software, which is great if you work in the web field, where sRGB is needed the most. You can learn more about the different color gamuts in the display section of our review.

Now, for the color accuracy, what exactly is it? We measure color accuracy in Delta E (dE). This is the difference between the colors that a display shows and the colors in the real world. The lower the dE value, the more accurate the colors are. Here, on the MSI Sword 17, the accuracy with the factory settings of the display returns a dE of 2.9, which is quite far from being considered Creator-ready. Once we apply our Web Design and Office Work profile, the dE goes down to 0.9, which is a 3X increase in accuracy.

Office Work

Office Work should be used mostly by users who spend most of the time looking at pieces of text, tables or just surfing. This profile aims to deliver better distinctness and clarity by keeping a flat gamma curve (2.20), native color temperature and perceptually accurate colors.

Design and Gaming

This profile is aimed at designers who work with colors professionally, and for games and movies as well. Design and Gaming takes display panels to their limits, making them as accurate as possible in the sRGB IEC61966-2-1 standard for Web and HDTV, at white point D65.

Health-Guard

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate. Health-Guard simulates paper so the pressure on the eyes is greatly reduced.
