Specs overview

As the first Core i9 member of mobile Intel CPUs, the Core i9-8950HK is based on the Coffee Lake architecture featuring a total of 6 cores and 12 threads. It is manufactured through a 14 nm process and supports the HyperThreading technology thanks to which the processor is able to execute 12 sets of instructions at the same time. In addition, the new CPU reaches base frequencies of up to 2.9 GHz and a 4.8 GHz turbo speed. Other specifications include 2 MB L3 cache, dual-channel DDR4-2666 RAM, and 45 W TDP. In addition, the processor is paired with an Intel UHD Graphics 630 graphics card clocked at 350 – 1200 MHz.

Now let’s take a look at its rival. The Core i7-7820HK is part of Intel’s Kaby Lake generation processors utilizing an improved 14nm+ manufacturing process. Featuring 4 cores and 8 threads, the chip ticks at 2.9 GHz base clock speeds and 3.9 GHz maximum frequencies. The specs sheet is complemented by support of the Hyper-Threading technology, 8MB LL cache, a dual-channel DDR4-2400 or DDR3L-1600 memory controller and a TDP of 45W including the iGPU which in our case is the Intel HD Graphics 630 clocked at 350 – 1150 MHz.

Benchmarks

Results are from the Cinebench 20 CPU test (the higher the score, the better)

Results are from our Photoshop benchmark test (the lower the score, the better)

Results are from the Fritz chess benchmark (the higher the score, the better)

As you can see from the charts above, the race is pretty tight. The Intel Core i9-8950HK in Intel Core i9-8950HK Prototype laptop surpasses its rival when it comes to 3D rendering (tested with Cinebench 15) and the Adobe Photoshop test with around 28% and 44% respectively. The two processors are almost on par when you take a look at the results from the synthetic raw benchmarks (tested with Fritz).

Conclusion

To sum things up, the Intel Core i9-8950HK seems to be the winner in this comparison. We also suggest considering other criteria such as price, battery life, and GPU performance based on your priorities.

Is that correct?
“however, the Intel Core i7-7820HK found in Lenovo Legion Y920 performs around 44% better in the Adobe Photoshop test.”
“Results are from our Photoshop benchmark test (the lower the score, the better)”

i9 = 6.40 and i7 = 9.21
Which one is better in Photoshop?
