Snapdragon 615 (+Adreno 405) vs MediaTek MT6755 Helio P10 (+Mali-T860) – performance, benchmarks, and temperatures

Qualcomm-Vs-Mediatek1

Recently we had the chance of testing MediaTek MT6755 Helio P10’s capabilities. This mobile chip is found in Sony Xperia XA – a model we reviewed last month. One of the Qualcomm alternatives to Helio P10 is Snapdragon 615, which can be found in upper mid-range models. This is why we thought it may be intriguing to juxtapose the two in a more detailed manner comparing their specs, benchmark results, and exterior temperatures. For this reason, we put to the test the similarly priced Sony Xperia XA and Motorola Moto X Play.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 has several modifications, and we’re testing the one found in Motorola Moto X Play – MSM8939. It offers eight Cortex-A53 cores popular for their low energy consumption. They are 8 divided into two groups. The first four are ticking at 1.11 GHz, and when more power is needed – you get the second four, ticking at 1.5 GHz. Snapdragon 615 is a 64-bit mobile CPU manufactured through a 28nm technological process. It supports up to 21MP cameras, Full HD video recording and playback, Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0, LTE Cat. 4, Wi-Fi 802.11n/ac, and NFC. Additionally, this chip brings the Adreno 405 GPU.

MediaTek MT6755 Helio P10 is a 64-bit CPU manufactured through a 28nm technological process. According to MediaTek, it is 30% more energy efficient than other 28nm chips. Furthermore, the mobile processor has eight Cortex-A53 cores, ticking at 2.0 GHz. Helio P10 supports Full HD displays, as well as the MiraVision 2.0, UltraDimming, and BluLight Defender technologies. Also available is LTE Cat 6 connectivity, bringing high connection speeds. The chips can work with up to 21MP cameras, and allows Full HD video recording. Additionally, the available GPU here is Mali-T860 with an operating frequency of 700 MHz.

Benchmarks

This is not always the most accurate way to determine performance, but still, we would like to compare the two models’ results. The first four tests examine computing performance, whereas the other four – graphics performance.

Exterior temperatures

High exterior temperatures are chiefly caused by the mobile processor of a phone, and that’s why we’ve included this test, too. As you may expect, the Epic Citadel app came in handy with its 3D gaming simulation for more than an hour. In the two temperature maps below, you can find the maximum results registered in three sections on the smartphones’ backs.
