Last year, the Core i9-8950HK took over the title of the fastest Intel laptop CPU. Not only it was faster than the Core i7-8750H, but it was overclockable. This year, Intel gave its best to upgrade everything they potentially have. Hence, the Core i7-9750H is improved over its predecessor and can provide similar results to the Core i9-8950HK… or can it?

Specs overview

Both processors are built on a 14nm FinFET architecture, use 45W of power and have six cores and twelve threads. Additionally, they both feature 12MB of Cache, however, they work at different clock speeds. With its 2.60-4.50 GHz range, the Core i7-9750H is still behind the Core i9-8950HK in terms of frequencies. By the way, the latter is working at a Base clock of 2.90 GHz and reaches up to 4.80 GHz in Turbo.

While both of them work with DDR4 memory with speeds of up to 2666 MHz, the Core i7-9750H has the advantage of the 9th Gen., which supports a maximum of 128GB of RAM, whereas the Core i9-8950HK is limited to 64GB. Despite that, both of them are featuring the Intel UHD Graphics 630.

Conclusion

Intel Core i9-8950HK emerges as the winner of this competition by only an inch. We found these processors to be so equal to each other, that the results are mostly going to depend on the system they are integrated into. Technically, the Core i9-8950HK has the advantage of higher clock speeds, however, this advantage can diminish very quickly if the laptop is not able to cool the CPU down properly, as it happened to the Apple MacBook Pro 15 (2018).
