ASUS Vivobook 15 (X1502): Full Specs / In-depth Review

4 reasons to BUY the ASUS Vivobook 15 (X1502)

1. Design and build quality

The laptop comes with a clean design, using aluminum for the lid and plastic for the base and bottom panel. Furthermore, the whole body has an antimicrobial coating, which is perfect for keeping the area clean and sanitary, if, for example, you’re working at a hospital and are around germs and many people. Durability turned out to be pretty good, as the metal lid is resistant to flex, while the base didn’t give us an inch as well, which is surprising. Once we were in the teardown process, we found out that the base has a metal frame, so now we know why. As for portability, this is a pretty portable 15-inch device, weighing 1.70 kg and having a profile of 19.9 mm.

2. Upgradeability

The device has decent upgradeability, with one SODIMM slot and one M.2 slot for Gen 4 SSDs. There is up to 8GB of soldered memory as well, so the laptop can survive and thrive, even with the increasing RAM requirements for apps and even the OS that we use.

Here is our teardown video which shows how to access both the RAM and SODIMM slots.

3. Battery life

The laptop does pretty well with its 42Wh battery, which we have to say is quite small. But, with a U-series CPU, it seems to hold on for relatively long, giving us 8 hours and 40 minutes of Web browsing, or 6 hours and 5 minutes of video playback. Now, we conduct the battery tests with the Windows Better performance setting turned on, screen brightness adjusted to 120 nits, and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with.

4. Display quality

We don’t really expect professional-level color reproduction from a device as affordable as the Vivobook 15, and if you don’t too, you’ll be satisfied with the panel that the device brings. The Full HD IPS screen comes with good viewing angles, a peak brightness of 269 nits, and a good contrast ratio of 1270:1. Also, the panel doesn’t use PWM at all, so you’re safe to use it for prolonged periods of time.

Office Work

Office Work should be used mostly by users who spend most of the time looking at pieces of text, tables or just surfing. This profile aims to deliver better distinctness and clarity by keeping a flat gamma curve (2.20), native color temperature and perceptually accurate colors.

Design and Gaming

This profile is aimed at designers who work with colors professionally, and for games and movies as well. Design and Gaming takes display panels to their limits, making them as accurate as possible in the sRGB IEC61966-2-1 standard for Web and HDTV, at white point D65.

Health-Guard

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate. Health-Guard simulates paper so the pressure on the eyes is greatly reduced.

1 reason NOT to buy the ASUS Vivobook 15 (X1502)

1. I/O

The port selection of the Vivobook 15 still needs some more work, with one USB 2.0 port, two more Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports, an HDMI 1.4 port, an audio jack, and a USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, which only works for data transfer and doesn’t have any of the cool Power Delivery or DisplayPort features.
