Workstations have been getting smaller and smaller, and now we’ve gotten to a point where we’ve got devices like the Dell Precision 14 5740, a laptop’s essentially a mini studio for whatever work you’ve got going on, thanks to high-powered hardware, an amazing display selection. Obviously, size is a limiting factor, but considering how stacked the laptop is, we think Dell is onto something here.

Design

The laptop comes with a very slim chassis, however, we’ve got no information about the materials. We assume a large portion is to be made of metal, as we have a profile of only 11.09 mm and a weight of 1.48 kg. The design is great and mimics the XPS and bigger Precision laptops, with a carbon fiber base. It features stereo speakers, as well as a power button that doubles as a fingerprint reader.

Display

There are two 16:10 IPS displays to pick from, with either a FHD+ or a QHD+ panel. Both come with 500 nits of brightness and 100% sRGB coverage. The FHD+ display does have a higher contrast ratio of 1200:1, compared to the 1000:1 found on the FHD+ panel.

Specifications and features

In terms of hardware, while we’re excited to see the appearance of the Alder Lake H-series, starting with the Core i5-12500H and going as high as the Core i9-12900H, you’d certainly need great cooling to keep them in check. What’s interesting is that Intel specifically has the P-series for smaller and more compact devices, but Dell are either stubborn, or they’ve figured out some new ingenious cooling solution.

As for graphics, there are the integrated SKUs that are inside the CPU, as well as the NVIDIA RTX A1000, an entry-level Pro-grade GPU, which is one more component for the laptop to cool down. As for ports, we see four Thunderbolt 4 ports, a MicroSD card reader, and a 3.5mm audio jack.
