[Comparison] Intel Core i7-1280P vs Core i5-12500H – a fair fight
Can a 28W Core i7 CPU with a boatload of cores and threads outperform what we call a supercharged Core i5 CPU with a TDP of 45W? This is what we’re testing today, as we put the Core i7-1280P against the Core i5-12500H.
The new Core i5 CPU is unreal, managing to place third in our Top Laptop CPU Ranking, over the new Ryzen 6000H-series, including the Ryzen 7 6800H.
The Core i7 is the more capable chip, in terms of pure hardware, offering two extra performance cores and 4 more threads. The extra 6MB of cache might also play a part.
Today we are comparing the Core i7-1280P against the Core i5-12500H.

CPU benchmarks
The fight is more than fair, and the CPUs are very evenly matched. Still, the Core i5 comes out on top in 3D Rendering, with a lead of 2%. As for Photoshop, the Core i7 is quicker, finishing the benchmark 0.16 seconds quicker.

Conclusion
If you appreciate portability, the choice is clear. The Core i7-1280P offers similar performance, with even a victory in Photoshop, while undoubtedly having less cooling needs, and being more efficient, sparing battery life. However, strictly for gaming, laptops with the Core i5 will offer higher-powered graphics, since you will have to implement capable cooling, you might as well throw a good GPU inside and call it a day.
