ASUS ROG Flow Z13 (GZ301): Full Specs / In-depth Review

3 reasons to BUY the ASUS ROG Flow Z13 (GZ301)

1. Design and build quality

The tablet has a revolutionary design, coming with a very industrial aluminum enclosure, that comes styled with some gaming touches, mainly hits of red here and there. There’s also a piece of glass that is part of the kickstand. It acts as a window, allowing you to see part of the motherboard. The front panel is protected by Gorilla Glass 5. All in all, this is a portable and powerful machine, which weighs only 1.12 kg and has a profile of 12 mm.

2. Display quality

The 13.4-inch display options are perfectly suitable for both gaming and content creation. The base configuration offers an FHD+ IPS panel with a 120Hz refresh rate, which has excellent viewing angles, a max brightness of 511 nits (cd/m2) in the middle of the screen, 483 nits (cd/m2) average across the surface with a maximum deviation of 12%. The contrast ratio of 1230:1 is pretty good as well. In terms of color reproduction, the panel covers 96% of the sRGB color gamut, while reaching very good accuracy with our Design and Gaming profile.

Here are the results of our test with the stock settings (left) and with our profile applied (right). Our profile managed to lower the dE value to 1.2.

Praca biurowa

Projektowanie i gry

Health-Guard

3. Cooling

The laptop’s insides are very tough to access, so we wouldn’t advise you to try it on your own. In terms of cooling the laptop uses a vapor chamber with liquid metal, which means that the Core i9-12900H inside is set up for success.

Max CPU load

In this test we use 100% on the CPU cores, monitoring their frequencies and chip temperature. The first column shows a computer’s reaction to a short load (2-10 seconds), the second column simulates a serious task (between 15 and 30 seconds), and the third column is a good indicator of how good the laptop is for long loads such as video rendering.

Average P-core frequency; Average E-core frequency; CPU temp.; Package Power

Intel Core i9-12900H (45W TDP)0:02 – 0:10 sec0:15 – 0:30 sec10:00 – 15:00 min
ASUS ROG Flow Z13 (GZ301)3.54 GHz @ 2.68 GHz @ 64°C @ 95W3.04 GHz @ 2.48 GHz @ 70°C @ 83W2.45 GHz @ 2.07 GHz @ 67°C @ 50W

The CPU doesn’t get hot at all, while the clock speeds do seem to plummet in the later stages, which is a little weird. Still, for a small tablet, we understand the decision from ASUS to downclock the CPU a bit, just in case.

Real-life gaming

ASUS ROG Flow Z13 (GZ301)1299 MHz @ 62°C @ 40W1285 MHz @ 62°C @ 40W

The RTX 3050 Ti that we have here has a small TGP of 40W, resulting in lower clock speeds and temperatures.

2 reasons NOT to buy the ASUS ROG Flow Z13 (GZ301)

1. Upgradeability

As this is a tablet, good upgradeability is out of the window. You get soldered RAM and a single SSD slot hidden behind a cover on the back which comes off with a single screw. It has space for the tiniest 30mm SSDs.

2. I/O

The I/O on the device isn’t the largest, but it covers the basics. You have a single USB Type-A 2.0 port, two USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 2) ports, one of which has Thunderbolt 4 support, a MicroSD card reader, a 3.5 mm audio jack, and a connector for the XG Mobile external graphics card.
