Display Profiles for Lenovo ThinkVision E24-28 – Here’s How to Reach 3x Better, Superb Color Accuracy

Lenovo is a big player both in laptops and workstation PCs. Their ThinkPads, ThinkBooks, ThinkStations, and Think (insert word here) products deliver a unified design approach. They have proven themselves as capable office machines that often bring an innovative approach to cooling and general assembly. We were very positively surprised by the Lenovo ThinkStation P360 Ultra, which manages to pack super powerful hardware in a very small package.

However, today we’re checking out how well Lenovo can do monitors, with their ThinkVision E24-28 taking center stage. It’s an office monitor (duh), with a Full HD resolution, a 60Hz refresh rate, and an IPS panel. For now, it looks like pretty standard stuff. Now all the monitor has to do is bring good colors and great accuracy and it can be a great budget option for Photo and Video editors, as well as graphic designers, who need a screen on a budget and don’t need anything else (like higher refresh rates or any gaming features).

The great surprise here is that ThinkVision E24-28 reaches professional-level color accuracy with our Display Profiles (dE 1.2)! Read on.

Drivers, Software, and OSD menu

Lenovo offers the driver package for the monitor, and pretty much nothing else. It can be found on the Lenovo PC Support page.

The OSD menu here is simple, as you don’t get tons of features or gaming settings to adjust.

Design and Connectivity

The monitor matches the Think aesthetic, with a black plastic exterior a grey Lenovo badge on the back, and a ThinkVision logo on the left end of the chin. Speaking of the chin, it’s the thickest of the 4 bezels, housing the buttons that are used to control the monitor. The buttons are easy to get to and have a really tactile feel when pressed. The stand is quite agile, offering height adjustment, pivot, tilt, and 360-degree swivel, which means you can turn the laptop 180 degrees completely, making for great sharing of your work with others in the office.

In terms of ports, the ThinkVision monitor has an HDMI 1.4 port, a DisplayPort 1.2, and an old-school VGA port, which means that it can connect even to older PCs and hardware, making it versatile for a lot of devices.

Display quality, Buy our profiles, Verdict

As with most affordable office monitors, we’ve got a Full HD resolution that feels right at home at a 24-inch diagonal, while the IPS panel provides excellent viewing angles and a detailed image.

Color coverage

Here’s an illustration (Fig. 1). The whole “sail-shaped” map below consists of all the colors we can see, while the black crooked line shows all the colors from real-world scenes and nature around us.

Then, we’ve drawn some of the most important and interesting color spaces, compared to the colors the panel of Lenovo ThinkVision E24-28 can show:

Standard/For Web: sRGB – widely used color space for most consumer devices, ideal for Web design and development
For Print: AdobeRGB – used in professional photo editing, graphic design, and print
For Photographers/Video Editors: DCI-P3 – used in high-end film production, post-production, and digital cinema
Premium HDR: Rec.2020 – the widest consumer ITU color standard, covering a massive 75.8% of the visible spectrum, a benchmark for premium HDR content

Lenovo ThinkVision E24-28: the yellow dashed triangle (– – – – – –) represents the range of colors this monitor can display. In our tests, we calculated the total color coverage of the monitor at 97% of the sRGB color gamut and 82% of the DCI-P3 color gamut.

(Fig.1) Lenovo ThinkVision E24-28 covers 97% of the Web colors (sRGB)

This means that if the Lenovo ThinkVision E24-28 tries to show any color outside of its triangle, it will show the closest color to it that’s inside the triangle.

Color accuracy

Now let’s see how big is the difference between the real colors and the ones you’ll see on the Lenovo ThinkVision E24-28. We measure that distance in DeltaE – the bigger the number, the more different they look.

For the next illustration, we’ve chosen 24 common colors like dark and light skin, blue sky, green grass, etc.

Values below 2.0 are considered suitable for color-sensitive work. Before our calibration of the Lenovo ThinkVision E24-28, the Average color accuracy was 3.3 dE (Fig. 2), and with our Web Design and Office Work profile, it lowered to 1.2 dE (Fig. 3). This makes for a 2.75x increase in color accuracy, and the dE value is way below the 2.0 threshold that we consider to be accurate enough for professional color-sensitive work. Overall with the ample sRGB coverage and this accuracy, you’ll have no issue using the ThinkVision E24-28 for any type of graphic design, color grading, or digital art.

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom-tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate (they may seem strange at first but after a few minutes our brain will start recognizing them as accurate ones – that’s how Health-Guard differs from alternatives like f.lux).

Pro Tip: As the Health-Guard profile simulates paper and has as accurate as possible colors, it could be a great tool for prepress designers!

Gaming and Movies

We also have a third Gaming and Movies profile, which regulates the black colors, making dark areas in games and movies appear more visible, thus giving you a better viewing experience. Shooting at your opponent first can be a make-or-break moment, so make sure you’re best prepared with our profile.

Office Work

Office Work should be used mostly by users who spend most of the time looking at pieces of text, tables or just surfing. This profile aims to deliver better distinctness and clarity by keeping a flat gamma curve (2.20), native color temperature and perceptually accurate colors.

Design and Gaming

This profile is aimed at designers who work with colors professionally, and for games and movies as well. Design and Gaming takes display panels to their limits, making them as accurate as possible in the sRGB IEC61966-2-1 standard for Web and HDTV, at white point D65.

Health-Guard

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate. Health-Guard simulates paper so the pressure on the eyes is greatly reduced.
