iGPUs were a joke in the past - back in the day they didn't even support playing Full HD videos. But nowadays almost every CPU has one of these inside, and honestly, some of them are pretty good. Today iGPUs can help with tasks, such as encoding videos in the background or even playing games. Intel has specialized in the former, with their Iris Xe Graphics and future ARC integrated graphics having dedicated support for video editing and streaming, which is super useful. AMD, on the other hand, focuses a lot on gaming, as even the RX Vega units from a few years back can still play a lot of games. Today we'll take a look at something different, the RDNA 3-based integrated graphics, which increase the level of gaming performance by a ton. The best thing is that it goes in more and more pocket PCs allowing for powerful gaming on the go. But can it get past the golden 60 FPS line? And how does it fare against other popular integrated solutions? We'll even compare it to an RTX 3050! It comes with the Ryzen Z1 CPU, which has 8 cores and 16 threads, and uses 16GB of LPDDR5 memory running at 6400MHz, so it's ready to compete with a lot of gaming machines, even full-fledged laptops. For the sake of getting the best possible results out of the Radeon 680M, we've got the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Pro X as a sample device, which uses the Ryzen 7 6800HS as well as super fast LPDDR5 memory. If you want to know more about it, you can check out the In-depth Review. In short, it's a small and powerful product with a killer display, which is especially useful to video editors and designers. As for the rest of the iGPUs and GPUs that we'll use for comparison, we've got the ASUS Vivobook 16X representing the Radeon RX Vega 8, as well as the Intel version of the Slim 7i Pro X, which has a discrete 55W RTX 3050, so we can have a discrete GPU to use as a base level with which to compare the rest. We're choosing the 55W version specifically, as it would be the more sensible TGP option, considering portability. GPU benchmarks Here we have three different benchmarks, but things are looking pretty similar in all three of them. 780M is 140% faster than the RX Vega 8, which is a huge leap in performance. Over its predecessor, the Radeon 680M, the 780 has a 13% advantage. Lastly, comparing the 780M to the powerful RTX 3050, the 780M manages to deliver more than two-thirds of the 55W 3050's performance. Let's not forget we're talking about an integrated GPU in a pocket PC versus a full-sized laptop with a gaming video card! Gaming tests For the gaming part of the test, we've selected a total of three games, depending on how difficult they are to run. First off is CS:GO, which is already gone in favor of the new CS2 that's out right now, however, it's still one of the most popular games out there. Now, CS:GO is pretty CPU-dependent as well, but such is the case with most lighter esports titles. Once again, the RTX 3050 takes off ahead of all three iGPUs, however, the 780M delivers higher FPS than the 680M on the lowest preset, which is often used for the smoothest gameplay, even amongst pro players. And it's just 16% behind the RTX 3050! Still, it's weird to see the 680M deliver more FPS than its successor, but it might also be because the ROG Ally is a pretty compact machine so maybe cooling constraints are keeping it from unleashing its full potential. Once again, the RTX 3050 is the most powerful of all four GPUs. It's interesting that the higher in settings that you go, the lower the difference between the integrated graphics and the RTX 3050. At the Ultra preset, both the 680M and 780M offer 32 fps, while the RTX 3050 generates 34 fps. These days, even the slimmer laptops with just a CPU can handle workloads, that previously required a GPU. Now, while you can't expect the 780M to be a full GPU replacement, however, depending on the games that you play, it might be enough. Paired with the added portability and efficiency that comes with just having a CPU, devices like the Lenovo Legion Go and the ROG Ally are possible. Small computers, like Mini PCs, also utilize these chips to offer a lot of performance for different tasks, while remaining extremely portable. Still, if you're looking for something more powerful, you should get a laptop with a dedicated GPU.
