NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti vs GTX 1060 – Turing vs Pascal, the showdown

Today, we are comparing one of the most popular GPUs on the laptop market – the GTX 1060 to a graphics card that is expected to take the relay – the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti. Recently, we were able to show you how it performs inside of the Acer Nitro 5 (AN515-54), so you want a more profound opinion about the GPU performance you can check out our in-depth review.

You can check out our Top Laptop Graphics Ranking to see these two graphics cards and many more.

    Specs overview

First, let’s start with what connects these GPUs. Both of them are working with 6GB of memory (with a 192-bit interface) and need 80W of TDP. However, the GTX 1060 is using GDDR5 chips, while the GTX 1660 Ti utilizes GDDR6 modules, which are significantly faster. To further solidify the new guy’s advantage there are 1536 CUDA cores, compared to 1280 of the GTX 1060. Additionally, the latter is built on a 16nm manufacturing process, while the GTX 1660 Ti is built on a 12nm one.

Frequency-wise the two are pretty similar – looking at the base frequency shows us a higher clock speed of the GTX 1660 Ti – 1455 MHz vs 1404 MHz, while the Boost ones speak the opposite – 1590 MHz vs 1670 MHz in favor of the GTX 1060. However, when speaking about the memory speeds we see a 50% increase from the GTX 1060 to the GTX 1660 Ti – 192.2 GB/s vs 288 GB/s.

    Benchmarks

As you can see, there is a significant advantage of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti over the GTX 1060 in the synthetic benchmarks.

    Gaming tests

However, some of the titles show a less exaggerated margin between the two.

    Conclusion

This comparison resulted in a convincing win for the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti. It was able to push higher frame rates and much higher benchmark scores than its competitor for the same power input, which proves that the Turing GPUs is a big step from the Pascal line-up of graphics cards.
