We decided that it will be a good idea to compare one of the fastest Ice Lake CPU with the top dog from the Whiskey Lake generation. That’s why today the Core i7-1065G7 and i7-8665U are on the “arena” to show us which one is better and why. We are curious to see if the i7-8665U can squeeze something from its higher frequencies against the performance of a modern 10nm CPU like i7-1065G7.

So, Ice lake vs Whiskey Lake – there you go.

Quick Specs

Intel is asking $426 for the i7-1065G7 and $409 for i7-8665U (those are bulk prices for 1000 units) – that’s 4% difference which is almost nothing in this price range. Both contenders are 4-core / 8-thread CPUs with 8MB cache size. The i7-1065G7 has a lower base and boost frequencies when compared to i7-8665U – 1.30 GHz – 3.90 GHz vs 1.90 – 4.80 GHz. The TDP levels of the two processors are almost the same – the Ice lake one has a bit higher TDP-down value. The i7-1065G7 has the upper hand with its memory supported frequencies – DDR4-3200, LPDDR4-3733, and we have DDR4-2400, LPDDR3-2133 for the older CPU.

The Core i7-1065G7 has an Intel Iris Plus G7 iGPU while the i7-8665U is equipped with UHD 620.

No matter its much higher frequencies, the i7-8665U is slower here – the i7-1065G7 is 14% faster.

GPU Benchmarks

That probably hurts – Intel Iris Plus G4 is 45% faster than UHD 620. Another win for the i7-1065G7.

Verdict

Not much is left to say after the results above. The i7-1065G7 is just 4% more expensive but it’s a 10nm CPU with lower heat dissipation, 14% better CPU performance and it has 45% faster iGPU. No matter the load – daily tasks like Web browsing, watching Youtube content, photo and video editing, or playing light games – the Ice Lake CPU is a much better choice.

There is no point in buying a laptop with the i7-8665U – it’s slower in every aspect when compared to i7-1065G7. The Whiskey Lake king is still a fast CPU but it looks expensive when you see its performance and the price tag of the machines configured whit it. The only good reason to buy it will be a significant price cut.

So, the mighty one has fallen – the i7-1065G7 is a much better choice.
