Currently, the only Alder Lake U-series chip that we have tested is the Core i7-1255U. And to us, the only logical thing to do is to compare it to the best available ULV-competitor that we have, the Ryzen 7 5800U.

When looking at the spec sheet, the Core i7 is ahead in the core count, but since most of its cores are Efficiency ones, the overall thread count is drastically lower. The Ryzen 7 also leads in terms of cache, which might come in handy in prolonged heavy workloads.

Today we are comparing the Intel Core i7-1255U against the AMD Ryzen 7 5800U.

CPU benchmarks

The Ryzen 7 is comfortably ahead in 3D Rendering, scoring 26% higher in Cinebench 20. As for Photoshop, this is where Intel showcases its strong single-thread performance, finishing the benchmark first with a lead of around 0.7 seconds.

Conclusion

While AMD is still quite ahead when it comes to 3D Rendering, Intel has caught up to them in 2D Rendering, which is a win for AMD in the ULV segment. Currently, things are looking bleak in the higher-powered segments, as the P-series from Intel are more powerful than the HS-series from AMD, and the high-end 45W Core i7s and Core i9 chips outperform anything AMD currently has in its arsenal.
