It’s time to take a look at the new ASUS ROG STRIX SCAR 17 (G732). This one has the same design as the previous model but there is a lot of new hardware upgrades inside of it. The 2020 model is loaded with power thanks to the Intel Comet Lake-H processors and NVIDIA RTX Super GPUs. It has a generous amount of M.2 slots, better screen options, better I/O section, and upgraded cooling – the newer machine seems like a great upgrade over the 2019 model that is still a good gaming machine, but it is a bit louder than usual.

So, let’s check what the new G732 laptop has to offer.

Design: the same good looking design

ASUS has retained the same design as their previous model. The device looks modern and somehow aggressive. There is a wrap-around light bar and the bezels around the big screen are very thin. Ultimately, the laptop is a bit thicker than last year’s model but it’s probably due to the upgraded cooling solution. The profile is 27.9 mm for the version configured with the RTX 2080 Super and for the laptops with least powerful GPUs the profile is a bit thinner – 26.2 mm. Last but not least, the weight of 2.90 kg is acceptable for a big machine with a lot of strong components under the shell.

Display: up to 300Hz IPS display with 100% sRGB color coverage

Display-wise, the 2020 model is a real gem. The base option is a 17.3 unit with a 144Hz refresh rate and 3ms response time – not bad for a default panel. As of the other option – it is particularly interesting thanks to its 300Hz refresh rate and again – 3ms response time. According to the manufacturer both panels have 100% sRGB color coverage and you can expect vivid and punchy colors.

Hardware: overclockable CPUs and up to RTX 2080 Super with 150W TGP

The top-end configuration has a monstrous Intel Core i9-10980HK with applied liquid metal onto the CPU for better temperatures under heavy loads. Speaking of the processor, this one has 8 cores, 16 threads, 5.3GHz boost clock, and 16MB cache. That’s why ASUS has fitted a new and better cooling solution into the notebook. It boasts 4 heatsinks with 284 heatsink fins, 6 heat pipes, and two n-Blade self-cleaning fans.

Thanks to the ROG Boost, the RTX 2080 Super is additionally beefed to 1560 MHz core clock and it has a maximum possible TGP of 150W (at least for now this is the highest one). The RTX 2070 Super is boosted too – 1540 Hz and 115 W TGP which is the maximum possible value for this chip.

Connectivity and ports: decent I/O

The port selection is a good one. We have a USB 3.2 Gen 2 (Type-C) port with DisplayPort 1.4 capabilities, three USB 3.2 Gen 1 (Type‑A) ports, an HDMI 2.0b connector, an audio combo jack, and an RJ-45 port.

This machine impresses us with its three M.2 slots and RAID support. If you need a lot of space and you want blazing fast sequential read and write speeds from your SSD drives, well, this fella will definitely do the job. As you may expect, Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0 are on board as well. Unsurprisingly, the backlit keyboard has a per-key RGB illumination and probably it is a comfortable unit for gaming provided it is unchanged from the last year one, which was pretty good for gaming.
