[Comparison] Intel Core i7-11390H vs Intel Core i7-1165G7 – is the extra wattage really worth it?

Intel has this weird 35W family of CPUs that are neither as efficient as the Tiger Lake U-series nor as powerful as the big-name Tiger Lake H45 SKUs. They also need really specific cooling in order to work properly. This is why the experiment is now over, being replaced by a new Alder Lake P-series, which caps at 28W, which should hopefully resolve the cooling issues.

Today we have the most capable Tiger Lake H35 chip, the i7-11390H. It has a very high boost speed of 5.00GHz but uses only 4 cores and 8 threads. Going against it is a proven processor in the ULV-space, the i7-1165G7, which manages to deliver a really good level of performance despite its TDP limitations.

CPU benchmarks

In Cinebench 20 3D Rendering benchmark, the extra TDP headroom amounts to only a 7.1% increase in performance. The difference is more significant in the Photoshop test, with the i7-11390H finishing the test 0.6 seconds sooner.

Results are from the Cinebench R23 CPU test (the higher the score, the better)

Conclusion

All in all, if you’re looking for more performance, you might as well bite the bullet and upgrade to the 45W CPUs, which offer more power, core count, and cache size, instead of the Tiger Lake H35-series. As you can see, even the lower-powered U-series chips are able to keep up with them, while offering much better efficiency which equates to more battery life. It also makes for less cooling needs, thus allowing the device to be thinner and more compact.
