HP Omen 17 (ck2000) vs MSI Raider GE78 HX (13VX) – Battle Of The RTX 4080s (and 17-inchers)!
17-inch laptops are big and bulky so committing to one means that it pretty much needs to be desk-bound 24/7. The components inside get quite hot, while the sheer heft heaves your lap a hot and tired mess. However, most of the time these are the most powerful options that you have available.
Today we’ve got two 17-inch machines, the HP OMEN 17 and the MSI Raider GE78 HX. The OMEN 17 is an overall great laptop for a lot more than gaming, with a sleek exterior and access to really powerful CPUs and GPUs, including 175W RTX 4080s and 4090s.
On the other hand, the Raider is the second most powerful MSI gaming laptop behind the Titan, with 175W RTX Graphics up to an RTX 4090.

Unboxing
There isn’t anything out of the ordinary inside the two laptops’ boxes, just paperwork and the chargers. Both laptops come with 330W adapters, which are bulky and heavy.

Design and construction
The Raider is the heavier of the two devices, weighing 300 extra grams. On the other hand, it’s slightly thinner, with a profile of 23 mm. Design-wise, the OMEN has a matte black finish with a Gradient OMEN logo on the lid. The Raider has a classic MSI Dragon logo on the lid, along with gold and red accents on the back, where most of the cooling vents are located.

Keyboard and touchpad
Right from the start, the OMEN lacks a NumPad, while the Raider manages to squeeze one, at the cost of less space between individual keys. Still, the Arrow keys are big and semi-translucent. The same could be said about the WASD keys and the power button. Both keyboards have long key travel and clicky feedback. The touchpads are rather large, smooth, and responsive.
In terms of backlights, the OMEN has either a 4-zone or a Per-key RGB backlight. The MSI Raider only has a Per-key option, which can be synced with the rest of the RGB using the SteelSeries app.
Ports
The Raider has two more USB Type-C ports as well as an SD card reader, while the Omen has an extra Type-A port. The Omen also features a Mini DisplayPort.

Display and Sound Quality
The HP OMEN offers three display options, a Full HD 144Hz panel, and two QHD panels with either 165Hz or 240Hz refresh rate. On the Raider, you get taller 16:10 displays. You can choose between a FHD+ 165Hz display and a QHD+ 240Hz display, both with IPS panels. Since the Raider has a slightly smaller panel with more pixels, its got a higher density and a slightly lower Retina distance (the distance from which you can’t distinguish individual pixels).

Color coverage
Here are some illustrations (Fig. 1) & (Fig. 2). The whole “sail-shaped” map below consists of all the colors we can see, while the black crooked line shows all the colors from real-world scenes and nature around us.
Then, we’ve drawn some of the most important and interesting color spaces, compared to the colors that the panels of the laptops can display:
Standard/For Web: sRGB – widely used color space for most consumer devices, ideal for Web design and development
For Print: AdobeRGB – used in professional photo editing, graphic design, and print
For Photographers/Video Editors: DCI-P3 – used in high-end film production, post-production, and digital cinema
Premium HDR: Rec.2020 – the widest consumer ITU color standard, covering a massive 75.8% of the visible spectrum, a benchmark for premium HDR content
The yellow dotted line shows the color coverage of the HP Omen 17 (2023, 17-ck2000) and the MSI Raider GE78 HX (13VX).
The MSI Raider GE78 HX can display many more colors than its competitor, offering a much more vivid picture.
HP Omen 17 (2023, 17-ck2000) | MSI Raider GE78 HX (13VX) | |
---|---|---|
sRGB | 91% | 100% |

Color accuracy
Now let’s see how big is the difference between the real colors and the ones you’ll see on the three laptops. We measure that distance in DeltaE – the bigger the number, the more different they look.
For the next illustration, we’ve chosen 24 common colors like dark and light skin, blue sky, green grass, etc.
Below you can see the results of the two laptops with our Web Design and Office Work profile applied. The MSI Raider GE78 HX is the more accurate of the two, with a dE value of 0.8.

Response time (Gaming capabilities)
We test the reaction time of the pixels with the usual “black-to-white” and “white-to-black” method from 10% to 90% and vice versa.
The MSI Raider GE78 HX has a lower Fall Time + Rise Time = 7.6 ms. Short pixel response time is a prerequisite for a smooth picture in dynamic scenes.
PWM
PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) is a way for displays to adjust brightness. When used at lower frequencies it can seriously tire out our eyes. OLED and MiniLED panels are notorious abusers of PWM. Thankfully, both IPS displays show no PWM usage across all brightness levels.
Sound
The OMEN 17 has Bang & Olufsen-branded speakers, while the Raider has a set of 6 speakers from Dynaudio, placed all around the laptop. Both provide quality sound with no frequency deviations.
Performance – CPU, GPU, Gaming, Storage

CPU benchmarks
It’s clear enough that the Core i9 is more powerful than the Core i7 in Cinebench R23, however, the scores in Photoshop are decently closer, with just a 0.4-second difference in favor of the Core i9. With that in mind, though, Raider with a Core i9 will be more expensive. Still, we appreciate the availability of more powerful processors.
Here, we evaluate the CPU's performance using a real-world 3D rendering task, assessing its ability to handle complex computations and rendering workloads efficiently.
Results are from the Cinebench 2024 Multi-Core test (higher is better)
GPU benchmarks
In synthetic benchmarks, the two RTX 4080s trade victories in the different tests. Overall, the MSI Raider GE78 HX came first in three out of the four benchmarks that we use.
The results are from 3DMark Time Spy (Graphics). Higher is better.
Results are from 3DMark Fire Strike (Graphics) benchmark (higher the score, the better)
The results are from 3DMark Wild Life Extreme Unlimited. Higher is better.
Results are from the Unigine Superposition benchmark (higher the score, the better)

Verdict
Both the HP OMEN 17 and the MSI Raider GE78 HX are fine gaming machines, however, one of them is the clear winner when it comes to both gaming and overall functionality. Spoiler alert, it’s the MSI Raider. First of all, its got all the RGB you’ll ever need, which we’ve warmed up to in recent times. After all, if you buy a gaming machine, you might as well have all the bells and whistles that come with it.
The Raider has a better cooling setup, which contributes to a cooler GPU and an overall cooler laptop, both in terms of inside and outside temperatures. Not only is the GPU running a lot better, but it also maintains higher clock speeds, so you get more performance (just check out the gaming tests that we ran).
Second of all, you get a brighter display. With that said, the display on the HP OMEN 17 is quite crisp in its own right, and both laptops can be used for Content creation without a doubt.
In the end, it all comes down to pricing, as both laptops have shown to be capable of high-end gaming and content creation, with a slight to moderate edge to the MSI Raider.
