Intel Core i7-1065G7 vs i7-8650U – the new-gen CPU is the better choice

Kaby Lake R notebooks are still on the shelves no matter that the release date of those CPUs was back in 2017. It will be interesting to see what a two-year-old i7 CPU has to offer compared to a fresh product like Core i7-1065G7. The latter has a new tech process and new iGPU as well, so we’ll see if the old one can stand his ground in 2019.

Let the comparison begins.

Quick Specs

Intel is asking $426 for the new CPU – i7-1065G7 and $409 for i7-8650U. That’s not a big price difference. Core i7-1065G7 has a lower base frequency (1.30 GHz vs 1.90 GHz) but it can boost higher than i7-8650U (4.20 GHz to 3.30 GHz). Both CPUs have some identical specs – 4 cores and 8 threads, 8MB cache size, and almost the same TDP levels (i7-1065G7 has a bit higher TDP-down value).

You can clearly see the differences between the generations here – Core i7-1065G7 supports memories with much higher frequencies (DDR4-3200; LPDDR4-2133) than i7-8650U (DDR4-2400, LPDDR3-2133). Last but not least, the Ice Lake representative is equipped with the newest Intel Iris Plus G7 integrated graphics and we have Intel UHD 620 for i7-8650U.

CPU Benchmarks

Core i7-1065G7 is edging the i7-8650U with just 3% CPU performance difference. Both are very close.

Results are from the Cinebench 20 CPU test (the higher the score, the better)

Results are from our Photoshop benchmark test (the lower the score, the better)

GPU Benchmarks

Intel Iris Plus G7 is 45% faster than the UHD 620. Well, that’s bad news for i7-8650U.

Verdict

We think that our benchmarks above show everything. The two CPUs have almost the same CPU performance (ok, the new one is 3% faster) but when it comes to iGPU power the UHD 620 is crushed by the Intel Iris Plus G7 with 45% better score.

Intel Core i7-1065G7 costs $17 more (bulk price) but for us, it is the better choice because the overall performance is better. Still, the i7-8650U is not a bad CPU and if you find a nicely discounted notebook with it (and you don’t need better graphics performance) this will be the right choice because its CPU performance is still completely fine.
