MSI GL75 Leopard 10Sx vs MSI GL75 – an expected upgrade with no surprises

The idea behind the MSI GL75 Leopard 10Sx (and its predecessor – the MSI GL75) is a big gaming laptop in an almost plastic body that houses decent hardware inside and the end price is pleasant for such a notebook. Normally, the MSI GL75 Leopard 10Sx follows the same philosophy but it comes with new and more powerful CPU and GPU options.

This fella can be a modest gaming machine if you configure it with the GTX 1650 Ti, a 120Hz screen, and a single-color backlit keyboard. On the other hand, you can turn it into a true gaming laptop with the aid of the RTX 2070, a 144Hz screen, and a Steelseries keyboard with per-key RGB backlight. The choice is in your hands (or wallet).

Design: the same MSI gaming design

MSI has decided not to change the exterior look (which is an effective cost-saving decision) of the device probably because it still looks good and up to date. Perhaps the lid is made of aluminum (just like the 2019 device) and the rest is plastic that has a pleasant matte finish that looks and feels better than a standard glossy surface. Additionally, the profile thickness is the same – 28 mm, while the weight is slightly increased with 100 grams.

Display: so long 60Hz panels

No more 60Hz panels or at least for the MSI GL75 Leopard 10Sx. The base unit is a 120Hz display and there is a 144Hz panel as well. By the way, we tested the predecessor (MSI GL75) with a 120Hz PWM-free display and it left us with mixed feelings. While the contrast ratio and the viewing angles were quite good, the response time was rather slow for a 120Hz panel and the sRGB color coverage was mediocre. So, let’s hope that this year MSI can offer better displays.

Hardware: 10th gen CPUs and RTX 2070

CPU-wise, things look good with processors like the Intel Core i7-10750H which is a decently-fast solution for not-so-shiny gaming machines. It offers good performance because it has 6 cores and a hefty 45W TDP.

As for the GPUs, there are plenty of options. We start with the brand new GTX 1650 Ti and we can go as high as the full-blown version of RTX 2070 (the non-Super variant). If you choose the latter, the cooling solution will have 7 heat pipes. The heat pipe count can vary depending on the GPU selection.

Connectivity and ports: standard connectivity options

As we said, the I/O is decent – a USB 3.2 Gen2 (Type-C) port, three USB 3.2 Gen1 (Type-A) ports, an RJ45 port, an SD card reader, an HDMI connector, a Mini-DisplayPort, a mic-in jack, and an audio jack.

Storage and other specs: NVMe and SATA slots, optional Steelseries keyboard, and a 51Wh battery

In terms of storage options, the new device is no different than the 2019 machine – an NVMe slot and a 2.5″ SATA one. That is an okay selection for a mid-range gaming device. As for the keyboard options, you can see by yourselves the difference in the provided image below. The left one is the Steelseries keyboard with per-key RGB backlight and on the right, you can spot the standard variant with a single-color backlight. The battery – no surprises here, it is the same 51Wh unit that the MSI GL75 uses and we aren’t very pleased with the battery results that it shows in our review.
