MSI GP75 Leopard 10Sx vs MSI GP75 9Sx Leopard – Comet Lake-H for the mid-ranger

The MSI GP Leopard series is all about price/performance. These are mid-range devices that look like their more expensive siblings. Inside of them, we can find decent hardware that doesn’t cost a whole fortune.

That’s why the 2020 MSI GP75 Leopard 10Sx is an updated version of the last year’s device. They look the same but the new one can be configured with Comet Lake-H CPUs and for the video card you can go up to the full-blown variant of NVIDIA RTX 2070. The latter is a decent upgrade over the older machine’s top GPU option – the “modest” RTX 2060.

In short, just like many other new laptops – same look, different hardware.

Design: the same MSI gaming design

The new one looks exactly the same as the old one and it has a typical MSI gaming design. At least the profile is reduced from 29.0 mm to 28.0 mm. However, the weight is retained at the same level – 2.60 kg.

Display: a decent variety of high refresh rate display options

In terms of display variants, there are new panels with high refresh rates. The 2019 device has just two display options – a 60Hz one and a 144Hz option. This year, the default panel is a 120Hz unit, after that, we have a 144Hz one, and the last stop is a 240Hz display. That’s a nice bump when it comes to panel options and if the 240Hz display is combined with an RTX 2070 it’ll turn the laptop into a powerful gaming machine.

Hardware: 10th gen CPUs from Intel and up to a full-blown RTX 2070

Just don’t expect some 8-core monstrosity here, it’s a mid-ranger. The 2019 devices relied on a Coffe Lake CPUs and the 2020 notebooks can be picked with the refreshed chips – Comet Lake-H. Like the Intel Core i7-10750H which has 6 cores, 12 threads, 12MB cache size, and it can boost up to 5.0 GHz (just one core). No ULV CPUs here, the TDP is 45W so this one has more sustained frequencies under load compared to the 15W chips.

As for the video card, you can choose between the full-blown RTX 2070 and RTX 2060. Yes, no RTX Super for the Leopard.

Connectivity and ports: essential I/O for a gaming device

The port selection isn’t something special but it’s fine for not-so-expensive laptop – a USB 3.2 Gen2 (Type-C) port, three USB 3.2 Gen1 (Type-A) ports, an RJ45 connector, an SD card reader, an HDMI connector, a Mini-DisplayPort, a mic-in jack, and an audio jack.

Storage and other specs: optional per-key RGB keyboard, M.2 and SATA ports, and 51Wh battery

The 2019 MSI GP75 Leopard has two M.2 NVMe ports and a 2.5″ SATA one while the new one comes with just a single M.2 port and one 2.5″ SATA which is a shame. The optional per-key backlit keyboard is a good variant for gamers who like to customize everything about their machines, while the base unit is a single-color keyboard that glows in red. The battery capacity is not very impressive – 51Wh. Probably it’ll have a hard time with a high refresh rate display and the RTX 2070.
