How to open MSI Modern 15 H C13M – disassembly and upgrade options


Opening the Device

  1. Undo the 11 Phillips-head screws securing the bottom panel.
  2. Insert a thin plastic tool at around a 45-degree angle between the plate and the base, and pry the sides. Push harder than usual while sliding the tool.
  3. Pry the front and the back normally to remove the bottom panel.

Battery Removal

  1. Disconnect the battery connector from the mainboard.
  2. Undo the 4 Phillips-head screws securing the battery.
  3. Lift the battery to remove it from the device.

Note: The base battery is a 39.3Wh model. An optional 53.8Wh variant is also available. The battery provides approximately 7 hours of web browsing or 5 hours of video playback.


Memory Upgrade

  1. Locate the RAM zone covered with two foils glued to a rubber element.
  2. Carefully peel off the foils to access the SODIMM slots.
  3. According to MSI, the two SODIMMs can handle up to 64GB of DDR4-3200MHz RAM in dual-channel mode.
  4. Insert new RAM modules if upgrading.

Note: The CPU can support up to 96GB, so the laptop likely wouldn’t have issues running more than the official manufacturer’s specified limit.

Storage Upgrade

  1. Locate the M.2 slot for 2280 Gen 4 SSDs near the Wi-Fi card.
  2. Remove the preinstalled NVMe SSD if present.
  3. Install the new SSD in the slot.

Cooling System Overview

  1. The cooling system includes a pair of fans, three heat pipes, two heat sinks, and a heat spreader.
  2. Ensure all cooling components are free of dust and debris to maintain optimal performance.
