ASUS TUF Gaming A17 FA707: Full Specs / In-depth Review

4 reasons to BUY the ASUS TUF Gaming A17 FA707

1. Design and build quality

The ASUS TUF devices have evolved drastically since their inception, becoming better looking and fleshing out the TUF brand as a whole. Slowly but surely we see more and more metal make its way into the design of the machine, with the whole lid being crafted out of the material. All TUF devices have also passed the MIL-STD-810H certification tests, which test the devices in every meaningful way to determine durability. The lid is very tough, resisting every attempt to flex it. The base is in a similar state, despite the inherent weakness that larger notebooks bear, due to their sheer size. In terms of weight and height, this is one of the lighter 17.3-inch gaming devices, sporting a weight of only 2.60 kg and having a profile of 25.4 mm.

2. Upgradeability

Gaming laptops should put a lot of focus on upgradeability, as game sizes and RAM requirements continue to increase. ASUS thankfully listens, offering two SODIMM RAM slots that can hold up to 64GB of DDR5 memory running in dual-channel mode. Storage-wise, there are two M.2 PCIe x4 slots for expansion, both of which support Gen 4 drives.

Here is our detailed teardown video, which shows how to access both the RAM and SSD slots.

3. Display quality

There is a single display offering, which is amazing, purely for gaming. The 17.3-inch screen uses an IPS panel and has an FHD resolution. The display comes with comfortable viewing angles, so you can enjoy movies and games on a bigger screen.

The max brightness of 274 nits in the middle of the screen and 267 nits as an average for the whole area might seem low, but you will be fine if you’re gaming at home or in an enclosed space. The contrast ratio is high enough at 1390:1. There’s also 0 PWM usage across all brightness levels, along with G-Sync and Adaptive-Sync support.

The coverage and accuracy aren’t suitable for professional work, as the display covers only 53% of the sRGB color gamut.

The accuracy doesn’t improve a lot, even with our Design and Gaming profile, which manages to bring the dE value only slightly: from 4.1 to 3.8. Here are the results of our test with the factory settings (left) and with our profile applied (right).

Office Work

Office Work should be used mostly by users who spend most of the time looking at pieces of text, tables or just surfing. This profile aims to deliver better distinctness and clarity by keeping a flat gamma curve (2.20), native color temperature and perceptually accurate colors.

Design and Gaming

This profile is aimed at designers who work with colors professionally, and for games and movies as well. Design and Gaming takes display panels to their limits, making them as accurate as possible in the sRGB IEC61966-2-1 standard for Web and HDTV, at white point D65.

Health-Guard

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate. Health-Guard simulates paper so the pressure on the eyes is greatly reduced.

4. Battery life

The 90Wh battery pack works pretty well with the Ryzen 6800H, showing the CPU’s power efficiency. The laptop lasts for 12 hours and 55 minutes of Web browsing, or 11 hours and 3 minutes of video playback. Now, we conduct the battery tests with the Windows Better performance setting turned on, screen brightness adjusted to 120 nits, and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with.

1 reason NOT to buy the ASUS TUF Gaming A17 FA707

1. I/O

The I/O is the backbone of the system, as you’ll be connecting all types of peripherals or accessories. Due to using AMD hardware, Thunderbolt support is flying through the window. An SD card reader is also missing. What is available are two USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports, two USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports, an HDMI 2.0b port, an Ethernet port, and a 3.5 mm audio jack.
