HP Spectre x360 14 (14-ef0000) – Top 5 Pros and Cons

The Spectre series from HP offers one of the more polarizing designs that we’ve seen on a laptop, so it’s a no-brainer it refrains from using it on other devices.

Here we have the new HP Spectre x360 14, which brings Alder Lake U-series hardware inside a portable convertible chassis. Also, despite being called the 14, it has a 13.5-inch display, putting it on par with the MacBook 13s of the world and other portable laptops.

Today we present you with LaptopMedia’s top 5 picks about the HP Spectre x360 14 (14-ef0000).

HP Spectre x360 14 (14-ef0000): Full Specs / In-depth Review

4 reasons to BUY the HP Spectre x360 14 (14-ef0000)

1. Design and build quality

The Spectre has a fully-aluminium chassis, while our unit sported a stealthy black paint job, which looks incredible, especially with the silver lining on the edges and the glossy HP logo on the lid. The front of the laptop looks normal, while the back has its corners chopped off, resulting in a unique appearance. In these corners sits some of the I/O, which we’ll talk about below. The laptop is plenty durable, while the display is covered by Gorilla Glass NBT. In terms of dimensions, the Spectre stops the scales at 1.36 kg and has a profile of 16.9 mm, but it feels even thinner due to the curved edges.

2. I/O

The port selection includes one USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 2) port, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, a MicroSD card reader, and a 3.5 mm audio jack.

3. Display quality

There are two display options available, with an FHD+ IPS display or a 3K OLED panel. We tested the latter, which comes with excellent viewing angles, a peak brightness of 412 nits, and fully covers both the sRGB and DCI-P3 color gamuts.

The color accuracy gets improved by our Design and Gaming profile, lowering the dE value down to 1.5. Here are the results with the stock settings (left) and with our profile applied (right).

Office Work

Office Work should be used mostly by users who spend most of the time looking at pieces of text, tables or just surfing. This profile aims to deliver better distinctness and clarity by keeping a flat gamma curve (2.20), native color temperature and perceptually accurate colors.

Design and Gaming

This profile is aimed at designers who work with colors professionally, and for games and movies as well. Design and Gaming takes display panels to their limits, making them as accurate as possible in the sRGB IEC61966-2-1 standard for Web and HDTV, at white point D65.

Health-Guard

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate. Health-Guard simulates paper so the pressure on the eyes is greatly reduced.

4. Battery life

The 66Wh battery carries itself quite well, lasting for 11 hours and 40 minutes of Web browsing, or 10 hours and 9 minutes of video playback. Now, we conduct the battery tests with the Windows Better performance setting turned on, screen brightness adjusted to 120 nits, and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with.
