Lenovo IdeaPad 5 (14″, 2022) – Top 5 Pros and Cons
Previously, Lenovo used a fair bit of plastic for the construction of the IdeaPad 5 and the Legion 5, if not making the entire devices out of the material. However, this year, they’re trying to make their mid-range laptops feel more premium, so implementing metal feels like the best possible course of action.
Today we have the small and compact IdeaPad 5, which comes with the Zen 3 refreshed AMD U-series CPUs, which come to be cheaper than the Ryzen 6000U-series, while still offering good performance and efficiency.
Today we present you with LaptopMedia’s top 5 picks about the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 (14″, 2022).
Lenovo IdeaPad 5 (14″, 2022): Full Specs / In-depth Review
3 reasons to BUY the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 (14″, 2022)
1. Design and build quality
The IdeaPad is offered with a fully aluminum chassis, which weighs 1.39 kg and has a profile of 16.9 mm. In terms of durability, the lid shows a bit of flex, but the base is very sturdy. Speaking of the former, it opens with one hand easily, from where we can see the base and all its contents.
There’s a keyboard, a touchpad, and a power button with a fingerprint reader embedded in it. The board has decent key travel and clicky feedback, while the pad is covered in Mylar, managing to mimic glass pretty well. It’s smooth, while also being quite accurate.
2. Battery life
With a 56.5Wg battery pack, the laptop lasts for 12 hours and 23 minutes of Web browsing, or 10 hours and 40 minutes of video playback. Now, we conduct the battery tests with the Windows Better performance setting turned on, screen brightness adjusted to 120 nits, and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with.
Brightness: 180 nits; Display Mode: SDR
Time to Full Discharge: Higher is Better
In order to simulate real-life conditions, we used our own script for automatic web browsing through over 70 websites.
3. Performance
The laptop can generate quite a bit of power from the Ryzen 3 5425U, scoring higher than the Core i3-1215U and the Core i7-11390H.
Results are from the Cinebench R23 CPU test (the higher the score, the better)
The performance comes from the good cooling setup, which uses two heat pipes and one fan.
AMD Ryzen 3 5425U (15W TDP) | 0:02 – 0:10 sec | 0:15 – 0:30 sec | 10:00 – 15:00 min |
---|---|---|---|
Lenovo IdeaPad 5 (14″, 2022) | 3.57 GHz @ 69°C @ 35W | 3.52 GHz @ 80°C @ 34W | 3.19 GHz @ 73°C @ 24W |
As you can see, the Ryzen 3 maintains high clock speeds and low temperatures.
2 reasons NOT to buy the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 (14″, 2022)
1. Upgradeability
The laptop comes with up to 16GB of DDR4 soldered RAM while the storage can be accessed by a single M.2 slot.
Here is our detailed teardown video, which shows how to access the insides of the device.
2. Display quality
While there are optional displays with good color coverage and accuracy, the one we have here doesn’t which really is a shame. It reaches a max brightness of 296 nits and a contrast ratio of 1230:1. It covers about 54% of the sRGB color gamut, while the color accuracy doesn’t improve by that much even with the Design and Gaming profile.
Here are the results of our accuracy test with the stock settings (left) and with our profile applied (right).

Office Work
Office Work should be used mostly by users who spend most of the time looking at pieces of text, tables or just surfing. This profile aims to deliver better distinctness and clarity by keeping a flat gamma curve (2.20), native color temperature and perceptually accurate colors.
Design and Gaming
This profile is aimed at designers who work with colors professionally, and for games and movies as well. Design and Gaming takes display panels to their limits, making them as accurate as possible in the sRGB IEC61966-2-1 standard for Web and HDTV, at white point D65.
Health-Guard
Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate. Health-Guard simulates paper so the pressure on the eyes is greatly reduced.
