Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 3 – Top 5 Pros and Cons

Mobile and more portable workstations are starting to get more love than they’re used to, which is great and totally bound to happen. As hardware gets more powerful and more efficient every year, it’s no wonder that smaller-wattage CPUs and GPUs can be put inside thinner laptops and still handle heavy computing workloads, despite not weighing north of 2kg.

This is how we get the Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 3, a device powered by the Alder Lake P-series, along with both iGPU and discrete GPU options, with the Quadro T550 taking center place.

Today we present you with LaptopMedia’s top 5 picks about the Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 3.

Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 3: Full Specs / In-depth Review

4 reasons to BUY the Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 3

1. Design and build quality

In usual ThinkPad fashion, the P14s Gen 3 is offered with multiple options for the build materials. The grey-colored laptops get an aluminum lid and a plastic base and bottom panel. The black-painted chassis has a lid made of a polymer that uses carbon fiber, glass fiber, and plastic mixed all together, while the bottom panel can be made from either plastic or aluminum. We had the polymer version with an aluminum bottom, which is pretty sturdy, as both the lid and the chassis show little to no flex. The combination of all of these materials means the laptop is quite nimble, weighing only 1.24 kg and having a profile of 17.95 mm.

2. Input devices

The laptop’s lid opens single-handedly, presenting the base, with a singular speaker grill, a keyboard, and a touchpad. The board has decent key travel and is very comfortable for backlight. Being a ThinkPad, it also has spill resistance and a backlight. The touchpad has a Mylar cover, making it very smooth. On the other hand, the tracking is a bit slow.

3. Battery life

The Thinkpad packs a 52.5Wh battery pack, which lasts for 11 hours and 40 minutes of Web browsing, or 6 hours and 51 minutes of video playback, an alright that will last you for a decent part of the day. Now, we conduct the battery tests using the Windows Better performance setting, screen brightness adjusted to 120 nits, and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with.

4. I/O

The ThinkPad offers complete I/O despite its small stature, with two USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, an HDMI 2.1 port, an Ethernet port, and a 3.5 mm audio jack.

1 reason NOT to buy the Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 3

1. Display quality

The laptop uses 16:10 displays, with up to a 4K UHD+ IPS option. Our laptop featured the base configuration, meaning an FHD+ IPS display. It’s still got comfortable viewing angles, good peak brightness of 355 nits, and a decent contrast ratio of 1320:1. The panel isn’t Creator-ready, covering only 56% of the sRGB gamut.

The color accuracy also isn’t ideal, both with and without our Design and Gaming profile. Here are the results of our test with the stock settings (left) and with our profile applied (right).

Buy our profiles

Since our profiles are tailored for each individual display model, this article and its respective profile package are meant for Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 3 configurations with 14.0″ AUO B140UAN03.2 (LEN403D) (FHD, 1920 × 1200) IPS.

Office Work

Office Work should be used mostly by users who spend most of the time looking at pieces of text, tables or just surfing. This profile aims to deliver better distinctness and clarity by keeping a flat gamma curve (2.20), native color temperature and perceptually accurate colors.

Design and Gaming

This profile is aimed at designers who work with colors professionally, and for games and movies as well. Design and Gaming takes display panels to their limits, making them as accurate as possible in the sRGB IEC61966-2-1 standard for Web and HDTV, at white point D65.

Health-Guard

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate. Health-Guard simulates paper so the pressure on the eyes is greatly reduced.
