Lenovo ThinkPad P16s Gen 1 – Top 5 Pros and Cons

Mobile workstations are incredibly trendy nowadays. Manufacturers know this, releasing the same laptop in different form factors, which don’t perform the same at all. The smaller ones are still advertised as workstations but hardly have the performance to back them up and stand as devices for heavy-duty users. Today we have the Lenovo ThinkPad P16s Gen 1. It’s not exactly a small workstation, but still a portable one. The s in the name is supposed to be for sleek and t live up to the name, with a thinner and lighter chassis. However,r to accomplish that, Lenovo has to settle with the Alder Lake P-series, which has performance, but not on the level of the H-series in the regular ThinkPad P16.

Today we’re presenting you with LaptopMedia’s top 5 picks about the Lenovo ThinkPad P16s Gen 1.

Lenovo ThinkPad P16s Gen 1: Full Specs / In-depth Review

2 reasons to BUY the Lenovo ThinkPad P16s Gen 1

1. Input devices

ThinkPads usually bring some of the best keyboards that you can ask for, and the ThinkPad P16s doesn’t disappoint. The unit offers spill resistance as well as a backlight, which is enough to make it a great option. However, the typing experience is simply fantastic, with long key travel and clicky feedback. The red TrackPoint in the middle works with the physical buttons above the touchpad, but using the pad itself might be the better option, as the Mylar surface is super smooth and the tracking and responsiveness are amazing.

2. I/O

The port selection of the ThinkPad P16s Gen 1 does forget the SD card reader, however, it still offers two Thunderbolt 4 ports, two USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports, an HDMI port, a LAN port, an audio jack, a SmartCard reader, and a SIMcard tray. The latter two are optional, but nice to have if you want extra security or LTE connectivity.

3 reasons NOT to buy the Lenovo ThinkPad P16s Gen 1

1. Display quality

For a laptop with a starting price of $1,200 dollars, we kind of expect a great display. While the unit that we have here isn’t necessarily bad, it doesn’t fit the price point. The Full HD+ IPS panel comes with good viewing angles and a max brightness of 332 nits but covers only 51% of the sRGB gamut, which makes it unfit for graphic design and color-grading.

The accuracy doesn’t improve a lot when we apply our Design and Gaming profile, with a stock dE value of 6.7, which goes down to 3.9 once calibrated. Here are the results of our accuracy test with the factory settings (left) and with our profile applied (right).

Buy our profiles

Since our profiles are tailored for each individual display model, this article and its respective profile package are meant for Lenovo ThinkPad P16s Gen 1 configuration with 16.0″ AUO B160UAN03.2 (LEN41B5) (1920 x 1200) IPS.

In addition to receiving efficient and health-friendly profiles, by buying LaptopMedia's products you also support the development of our labs, where we test devices in order to produce the most objective reviews possible.

Office Work

Office Work should be used mostly by users who spend most of the time looking at pieces of text, tables or just surfing. This profile aims to deliver better distinctness and clarity by keeping a flat gamma curve (2.20), native color temperature and perceptually accurate colors.

Design and Gaming

This profile is aimed at designers who work with colors professionally, and for games and movies as well. Design and Gaming takes display panels to their limits, making them as accurate as possible in the sRGB IEC61966-2-1 standard for Web and HDTV, at white point D65.

Health-Guard

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate. Health-Guard simulates paper so the pressure on the eyes is greatly reduced.

2. Performance

The power output coming out of the Core i5-1240P isn’t what you would expect a workstation device to have, especially a 16-inch one. Compared to other laptops with the same CPU, even the smaller ThinkPad P14s Gen 3, you’ll see that the little guys pack a stronger punch.

3. Battery life

Okay, the CPU is underperforming a bit, maybe the battery life’s better right? Well, we’d have to disappoint you once again, as the 52.5Wh battery lasts for 7 hours and 15 minutes of Web browsing, or 6 hours and 9 minutes of video playback. Now, we conduct the battery tests with the Windows Better performance setting turned on, screen brightness adjusted to 120 nits and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with. This means that if you put the device under more stress, you can expect lower numbers.
