The NVIDIA RTX 2070 SUPER Max-Q is the successor of the well-know RTX 2070 Max-Q. The new one comes with more CUDA cores, Low Voltage GDDR6 memory chips, and higher core clocks. In addition, the OEMs can implement two optional features into their laptops with this GPU – Advanced Optimus (in short, this is Optimus and G-Sync combined so you can switch between your iGPU and dedicated video card without system restart) and Dynamic Boost.
The latter allows a dynamic power shift between the CPU and the GPU. Let’s say that a particular game isn’t that processor bound and in this case, there will be more power headroom for the dedicated video card (which will probably boost higher than usual).

Specs overview
The GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER Max-Q comes with a higher shader count – 2560 while the non-SUPER has “just” 2304. This is a Turing GPU based on the TU104-725-A1 chip that has 64 ROPs, 8GB of GDDR6 memory, 1080 MHz / 1290 MHz base, and boost frequencies, and the memory is clocked at 11000 MHz. This 12nm video card has three TGP variants – 80W, 85W, and 90W. In our case, we have our hands on the 90W which is the best possible scenario.

Verdict
Well, this is a beast of a GPU. Because of the additional CUDAs and low power memory, there is more headroom for the core frequencies and if the laptop has a good cooling solution it’ll benefit from that too. At least for us, this one is really close to the performance levels of the full-blown 115W version of the RTX 2070 (we will compare these two GPUs in some of our future articles).
In the end, we can say that the 90W variant of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER Max-Q feels like a complete package. It shows great performance, it’s not too greedy for power, the heat dissipation is lower compared to the full-blown siblings and yes, this one can be found in thinner machines as well. But if you need a laptop for gaming and you want this GPU, maybe the cooling solution should be first in your shortlist, not the height of the laptop’s profile. Comfort during gaming is very important.
