Design

In terms of appearance, both MacBooks look the same as they did last year. They’re entirely made from metal and are generally some of the most durable laptops that we’ve tested. They’re well propped up from the surface, thanks to rubber feet on the bottom. The body of the laptop comes with rounded edges and corners on the bottom, while the lid appears to be a bit sharper.

There is a gap on the base, to make gripping the lid easier. Obviously, we can’t leave out the elephant in the room, the notch. In their pursuit of thinner bezels, Apple brought it to its laptops. While we were skeptical at first, it was supposedly done with the intention to integrate FaceID in the future.

However, there are rumors that the tech is more finicky to implement in a part as thin as the lid, so it’s still missing. At the end of the day, the notch doesn’t interfere with your work much, if at all. If you’re that annoyed by it, you can hide it, so it becomes a black bar that can still hold notifications, so the space is usable after all.

Display

The two MacBooks come with Liquid Retina displays. The 14-inch device has a 14.2-inch 120Hz panel with a resolution of 3024 x 1964p. The Pro 16 has a 16.2-inch display with a slightly higher resolution of 3456 x 2234p and the same 120Hz refresh rate, which will make the overall user experience feel much smoother and more responsive. The panels fully cover the DCI-P3 gamut, as well as have up to 500 nits of brightness in SDR, 1000 nits in XDR, and 1600 nits in HDR.

Specifications and features

The new M2 Pro and M2 Max are powering the new MacBooks. We have a more detailed article about them, which you can check out RIGHT HERE, but for short, the new Avalanche/Blizzard architecture should provide around 20 to 30% more performance than last year’s M2 SKUs, both in terms of CPU and GPU performance. You also get more Unified memory and higher bandwidth.

Both laptops come with the same port selection, which includes three Thunderbolt 4 ports, which all support DisplayPort and Power Delivery, so you can use them to either charge the laptops or connect to an external monitor. There’s also an HDMI connector, an SD card reader, and a 3.5 mm audio jack.

The audio setup on the MacBooks is pretty complete, with a six-speaker array. You can see some on the front, flanking the keyboard. Cooling is a big part of the laptops, however, the new SoCs are supposedly so efficient that the fans don’t need to even turn on most of the time.
