Top 5 reasons to BUY or NOT buy the Lenovo IdeaPad 730S (13″)!

The latest IdeaPad by Lenovo, 730S (in-depth review) is a magnificent aluminum device in 13” form-factor. It’s called “Yoga 730” in some countries but the hinges can open the laptop to 180º and not 360º so if they think that laying flat is a Yoga position then – Yes it’s a “Yoga”. Anyway, here are our Top 5 reasons to buy or skip this notebook.

3 reasons to BUY the Lenovo IdeaPad 730S (13”)

1. Great screen

IdeaPad 730S has a 13.3”, Full HD, IPS display which uses the AUO B133HAN05.1 (LEN8190) panel. It covers 97% of the sRGB gamut and the DeltaE 2000 (ColorChecker) is just 1.2 with our profile so the laptop could be used even for color sensitive work…or at least for on-the-go presentations. The contrast ratio is excellent – 1520:1. Bonus: It doesn’t use harmful PWM.

2. Long battery life

Speaking of on-the-go, IdeaPad 730S will surprise you with its battery life too. It has a 42Wh module onboard which is enough for about 11 hours of use without the charger.

3. Incredibly thin and light

If portability is important to you, you’ll be surprised by the IdeaPad 730S! It’s just 11.9mm thick (0.47”) and weighs 1.10 kg (2.4 lbs). Furthermore, although it has a 13.3” screen it’s pretty small the other dimensions are 307 x 210 mm (12.09″ x 8.27”), thanks to the narrow bezels.

2 reasons NOT to buy the Lenovo IdeaPad 730S (13”)

1. The fan kicks in during simple load; Heats up under pressure

You can’t expect a great thermal solution from a laptop with such dimensions and as expected the components get hot under pressure. The fan kicks in even for the simple tasks and when you put the 730S against a maximum load for a prolonged time, the keyboard heats up to 50º C (122°F). Of course, this isn’t a workhorse laptop so we’ll let this slide. Also, despite the high temperatures, 730S got pretty good results in our benchmark tests.

2. Lacks essential I/O ports

…or we should say “Lacks almost any I/O port you can think of”. Well, it has 3x USB Type-C (two of them are Thunderbolt) which screams “Premium” but you won’t be able to use your Type-A flash drives if you don’t have an adapter. Or Ethernet LAN. Or HDMI. Okay, somehow expected given the thickness of just 11.9 mm (0.47”).
