ASUS’ response to Acer’s Predator 17X – ROG G701 with GTX 980 and Core i7-6820HK

The ASUS ROG G701 is what the GX700 should have been in the first place – desktop-like performance without the “over the top” liquid cooling dock. If Acer can do it with its latest Predator 17X, why can’t ASUS?
You can find the notebook’s current price and configurations here: http://amzn.to/29INcXX
Anyway, better late than never right? In fact, the G701 can easily go head to head with the Predator 17X and even holds an edge over the latter with considerably thinner profile and lower weight. The Predator 17X sports a 44.95 mm thick chassis weighing around 4.55 kg while the G701 is just 33 mm thick and weighs 3.8 kg while offering largely the same hardware as its main rival. The G701 boasts overclockable Intel Core i7-6820HK CPU, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 with either 4GB of 8GB of GDDR5 VRAM. The motherboard can hold up to 64GB of DDR4-2133 RAM and display options are Full HD (1920×1080) IPS or Ultra HD (3840×2160) but the latter offer 100% NTSC coverage so there’s a good reason to opt for it.
The rest of the features and design are already known from the previous ROG models like the G751 and the GX700. Anti-ghosting keyboard with 30-key rollover, native G-Sync support on the integrated monitor, and enhanced audio experience. However, what sets the G701 aside from most of its competitors is the M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD in RAID 0 support. Usually, PCIe NVMe-enabled motherboards are common to find these days but if RAID 0 is enabled, the supported controller is SATA but here, well, ASUS claims that the PCIe x4 drives in RAID 0 can deliver up to 2842 MB/s read and 2482 MB/s write speeds.
