Tandem OLED Laptops are Coming! Thinner, Lighter, Brighter, and with More Vivid Colors

LG Display has just announced the start of mass production of Tandem OLED displays for laptops. You may have already heard about Tandem OLED through Apple and their new iPad Pro. While the super-fast M4 SoC has garnered much excitement, Tandem OLED is equally intriguing.

By the way, we’ve ordered the new M4-powered iPad Pro and are waiting for its arrival to conduct performance and display tests to evaluate both the M4 SoC and the Tandem OLED technology.

As the name implies, Tandem OLED consists of two layers, but what advantages does this technology offer?

First, let’s see what LG claims about their Tandem OLEDs:
✅ 3x Higher Brightness
✅ 40% Thinner
✅ 28% Lighter
✅ HDR True Black 500
✅ 100% of the DCI-P3
✅ 40% Less PowerConsumption

While these numbers might be somewhat exaggerated, we’ve seen the technology in person and can confirm that the difference is indeed noticeable. Of course, we’ll wait for the results from our laboratory tests.

The increased brightness is beneficial for devices like phones, tablets, and laptops, which are often used outdoors where it’s much brighter. Interestingly, the technology was first adopted in dashcams, indicating that Tandem OLEDs are more durable and resistant to heat and sunlight, enhancing the overall lifespan of the panel.

However, there are drawbacks. The two OLED layers consume more power, which could slightly impact battery life. It also adds complexity to the manufacturing process, potentially increasing costs.

As LG is currently the main supplier of Tandem OLED, we’ll likely see them featured in their Gram and UltraGear laptops, which are already top-notch devices. However, the first laptop to feature Tandem OLED appears to be the Dell XPS 9345. Its starting price is $1299 (with 120Hz, 1200p, IPS), and opting for Tandem OLED will cost an additional $400. So, there’s another drawback for you.
