What is USB 3.2 and what will it change?

As you may know, USB-IF is the organization behind all of the USB certifications, promotions, and popularization. Of course, their job is not easy, and they make it less and less easy for us to understand their latest and greatest inventions. If you are familiar with their naming scheme you know that by USB 3.1 (Gen. 1) for example, they mean the original USB 3.0, which has a maximum transfer speed of 5 GB/s. After they invented the real USB 3.1 (now everybody calls it Gen. 2) they introduced speeds of up to 10 GB/s.

However, celebrating their brand new creation, USB-IF has decided that this branding is too old. Hence, all of the aforementioned are moving to the USB 3.2 train. Which one is which, however? So, if you had no problems distinguishing the USB versions before, now you won’t have as well. That is because USB-IF is actually using logic to work out the names. What was USB 3.1 (Gen. 1) before is now called USB 3.2 (Gen. 1). Respectively USB 3.1 (Gen. 2) is now called USB 3.2 (Gen. 2) and the newest member of the family bears the name USB 3.2 (Gen. 2×2). You may have figured out by now that the newest technology uses two pair of wires running both 10 GB/s speeds, resulting in a total of 20 GB/s.

Manufacturers are still going to call it SuperSpeed USB, but be sure that they will make you know if their new laptops are featuring the latest technology or not.

P.S.: Usually I have to put a reference to our catalog somewhere here, but I couldn’t figure out what to refer to… so here are all laptops that have a USB port: https://laptopmedia.com/specs/
