Acer Predator Helios 18 (PH18-71) review – the RTX 4080 is absolutely mad

Design and construction

It is extremely weird that this crazy powerful device has a lowkey design. Its flat body panels are matte (and made out of aluminum). But the design is simplistic with no stripes, shapes, or anything to distract you from gaming. Even the Predator logo is really subtle. Yet, in a typical gaming device fashion – it glows.

The structural integrity of the Predator Helios 18 (PH18-71) is enviable. We found only a bit of flex in the lid and almost no flex in the base. The backside of the base extends about 2-3 centimeters behind the hinges, thus moving most of the heat away from your fingers.

In terms of dimension, the otherwise large footprint is complimented by a weight of 2.60 kg, which is pretty good for a gaming machine. Moreover, the profile stands between 24.9 and 26.9mm. Plus, we have to mention that the overall size of the laptop is similar to its 17-inch cousins.

The lid can easily be opened with a single hand with one fluent motion. Its bezels are really slim all around the display and naturally – the top one hides the Web camera.

Now let’s move to the fun part. The base houses a vent above the keyboard, which is briefly interrupted by the Turbo button. When it comes to the keyboard itself – it has an interesting architecture. The keystrokes are long but the feedback is a bit soft. However, the click mimics that of a mechanical keyboard, resulting in a weirdly satisfying typing experience.

Further below, you will see the huge touchpad. It has a glass surface, which is extremely smooth, as is the tracking, combined with the fast-paced displays.

Turn the laptop upside down, and you will find two speaker cutouts, as well as a ventilation grill. It’s worth noting that the cooling fans draw fresh air through the keyboard too. On the other hand, the hot air gets exhausted through four vents – two on the back, and one on either side of the machine.

Ports

On the left side, there is a LAN port, a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, a MicroSD card slot, and an Audio jack. Then, on the right, you will find a security lock slot and two USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports. Lastly, the backside is home to the power plug, an HDMI 2.1 connector, and two Thunderbolt 4 ports.

They said they’ll update it. They can’t at the moment as it’s an engineering sample

It’s in the stock in Germany now. 3200 Euro for 4080 and normal IPS display.

Why are you posting benchmarks of the 2023 helios against the 2022 of everyone else. Based on everyone of those benchmarks the acer loses to every other 2023 offering with the same equipment…

Warum die Tests in HD? Das ist Total unrealistisch, zumal das Notebook einen QHD Bildschirm hat 🤷‍♂️

Does it have 175W TGP? On the acer page and everywhere else I read that it only got 165W!? It would be much more interesting to compare this with other RTX 40XX cards and also other 4080s with the full 175W TGP..

And yes I also agree to others that it does not make any sense to have benchmarks in FHD while the laptop itself come in 1600p…

Would be nice if this could be updated otherwise this test is quite useless..

Hey, laptopgamer 🙂 Check this out:
https://laptopmedia.com/news/acer-claims-its-new-predator-has-a-165w-rtx-4080-its-actually-even-faster/

The tests are in FHD for comparison purposes, we didn’t have the chance to test with more resolutions
