Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 (PHN16-71) review – clever blend between Nitro’s affordability and Predator’s power

Design and construction

Although it bears the Predator name and logo, the Helios Neo actually uses a Nitro body. Its lid is made out of aluminum, while the base is plastic. Yet, the base is significantly more resistant to flex than the lid.

We have to say – this machine is pretty hefty. It has a profile that goes from 26.7 to 28.2mm, while the weight sits at 2.80 kg. That’s similar to the Dell G16 7630, which was a bit too heavy in our opinion. Nevertheless, there is quite an interesting feature – you will see numbers and symbols all around the lid. And the base has the Predator name printed in Morse code.

Here, the lid opens with one hand. The bezels around the display are pretty thin, except for the bottom one. Thankfully, you get an HD Web camera above the matte display.

Moving to the base, we see a large vent above the keyboard. It houses the “Turbo” button too. As far as the keyboard goes, it is a pretty pleasant unit with decent key travel and clicky feedback. It features a NumberPad, large Arrow keys, and a Predator Sense shortcut button.

In addition, the touchpad is pretty smooth and responsive. This makes for a very good input device combination, which makes the laptop quite satisfying for daily use (and for gaming).

If you take a quick look at the bottom panel, you will notice the two speaker cutouts, as well as the huge ventilation grill. It feeds cool air to the two fans inside, while the hot air is being exhausted through a couple of vents on the back, as well as one on either side of the machine.

Ports

On the left side, there is a LAN port, a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, a MicroSD card slot, and an Audio jack. Then, on the right, you get a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, and a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 2) port. Finally, look at the back to see the power plug, an HDMI 2.1 connector, and two Thunderbolt 4 ports,

I find the upgrade option weak, 2 nmve, are both now filled what is the max capacity they will hold (some have what can only be described as bios limits), for that matter can they take 80mm? Also what about the RAM, what is the max speed or capacity. The only really upgradable parts of a laptop should be properly investigated. Thanks for the effort though
