ASUS ROG Strix G16 (G614, 2023) review – it has a huge cooling potential

    Verdict

The ROG Strix G16 (G614, 2023) is a proper gaming device. Its memory and storage can be upgraded – as it should be. Also, the cooling solution is spectacular – it doesn’t need to run the fans too fast, which results in not too much noise during gaming.

After all, this is what you expect with that much copper. Let’s not forget the third fan. To be frank, we doubt that it makes much of a difference in terms of sheer cooling performance. However, it is definitely helping with the noise situation, taking advantage of the large heat spreader located on the back of the device.

Despite all of that, the Acer Predator Helios 16 (PH16-71) performs slightly better during gaming. And let’s not forget that either of the two laptops is meant for playing games.

On the bright side, the ROG Strix G16 features a super comfortable keyboard. It has long key travel, clicky feedback, large Arrow keys, and a Per-key RGB backlight. Not to mention the fact that its touchpad is one of the best on a gaming device right now.

ASUS ROG Strix G16 (G614, 2023)’s IPS panel has a WUXGA resolution, 16:10 aspect ratio, comfortable viewing angles, and a good contrast ratio. It covers 99% of the sRGB color gamut. Our Gaming and Web design profile gives it very good color accuracy, so you can essentially use the laptop with color-sensitive content.

Thankfully, the device doesn’t use PWM for brightness adjustment. This particular display features a 165Hz refresh rate and fast pixel response times for a very smooth image even in dynamic scenarios. There is an even faster option with a 240Hz refresh rate, full DCI-P3 coverage, and a 2560×1600 resolution.

Both displays come with a variable refresh rate function, which acts really positively on the battery life. Its 90Wh unit lasts for 6 hours of either Web browsing or video playback. This value is not stellar, but imagine what it would be if you didn’t have the option to run the panel at 60Hz natively.

At the end of the day, the I/O is great, although it lacks an SD card reader. A MUX switch is also present. This gives the full bandwidth to the dedicated GPU, giving you the edge, when you need it.

As always, the machine is more than recommendable. There are only a few things that prevent the ROG Strix G16 (G614, 2023) from being perfect. Let’s hope that they get fixed for next year, but if you don’t need to wait, this one is really worth it.
