ASUS ROG Strix G18 (G814, 2023) review – as good as portable gaming gets

    Verdict

One of the best things about this machine is its cooling. It can take all of the abuse even from the top-tier spec. Although the one we tested was not the top model, it clearly shows how well this system works.

With three fans and liquid metal, it is one of the more revolutionary designs out there. It is going to be interesting how it will compare to some vapor chamber solutions out there.

Despite the very powerful hardware, the ASUS ROG Strix G18 (G814, 2023) has a good battery life. It lasts up to 10 hours of light use. This is commendable, considering the fact that the HX-series of Intel CPUs have a 55W TDP – higher than any consumer laptop processor out there.

To accommodate the great cooling, and the large display, ASUS has made the laptop a bit heavy and clunky. Its thickness reaches about 30mm, while the weight is set in stone at 3.00 kg. Still, the execution is very good and the build quality is great.

ASUS ROG Strix G18 (G814, 2023)’s IPS panel has a WUXGA resolution, comfortable viewing angles, and a good contrast ratio. It covers 98% of the sRGB color gamut and has accurate colors thanks to our Gaming and Web design profile. To be honest, gamers rarely care about color accuracy, and this is why we think they will be more ecstatic to hear about the super quick pixel response time that the 165Hz panel comes with.

It comes without a shadow of a doubt that this notebook has two SODIMM slots for memory and two M.2 PCIe x4 slots for storage expansion. In terms of types, it relies on DDR5 for the RAM, and either Gen 3 or Gen 4 for the SSDs.

Then, let’s mention one of the only things we couldn’t forgive – the lack of an SD card reader. On the bright side, we are pretty happy with that, because otherwise, we wouldn’t have much to complain about. This notebook is just too good. Well, if we have to be nitpicking, its camera only shoots 720p video, but we are happy to even see one, considering the thin bezels around the display.

So, if you are willing to invest in a rather premium gaming machine, the ASUS ROG Strix G18 (G814, 2023) is a fantastic option. Furthermore, its cooling makes it even more appetizing for lovers of quiet gaming.
