ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 18 (G834, 2023) review – no game can challenge this beast

Verdict

As we suggested at the beginning of this review, the ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 18 (G834, 2023) is a beast. Not only because it has top-of-the-line hardware, but also because it can actually deliver on the expectations set by that. After all, it is not easy to cool down a processor that can sustain 133W and an RTX 4090 with 175W of TGP.

Naturally, this leads to fantastic performance in every game currently on the market. Its 16GB GDDR6 graphics memory will set you up for years to come, while the two SODIMM slots on the inside will ensure that you are always prepared to render large civil engineering projects on the go.

We are aware that this sounds like an advertisement review, but we can assure you – it is not. It’s just the fact that the device is extremely powerful, and it deserves its due credit.

All of this would be enough for us to recommend this device, but there is something similarly impressive about it. ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 18 (G834, 2023) comes with an 18-inch IPS panel. It has a WQXGA resolution with a 16:10 aspect ratio, comfortable viewing angles, and doesn’t use PWM for brightness adjustment. It covers 100% of the sRGB and DCI-P3 color gamuts and offers good color accuracy.

Furthermore, it runs at the blazingly quick refresh rate of 240Hz and it’s paired with quick pixel response times. Through Armoury Crate, you can toggle between sRGB and DCI-P3, and run the laptop forcefully at 60Hz to improve your battery life.

Speaking of which, the notebook got us through 8 hours and 30 minutes of Web browsing, or 5 hours of video playback on a single charge. ASUS claims that the included 330W charger can fill 50% of the capacity for only 30 minutes. It’s great to learn that you can use the power adapter for something different than cutting charcuterie.

In a perfect world, the review would end here. But since nothing is perfect, we have to mention some points we would like to improve for next year. First and foremost – ASUS shouldn’t be scared of the SD card slot. While it takes some space on the inside, it can be a useful commodity.

Although it is clearly nitpicking, the back’s LED lights would look much better if they were centered in the middle of the back panel. On the bright side, we have to mention the presence of a Web camera – something that was bizarrely missing in previous models.

At the end of the day, this is a niche device. It is expensive, but in our view – it is definitely worth something in the roundabout of a kidney. We are going to compare it with the Acer Predator Helios 18 (PH18-71) as soon as we are able to snatch a retail version of the product.
