Lenovo IdeaPad Pro 5 14 Gen 9 (14AHP9) review – Stunning OLED Meets Long Battery Life
Lenovo offers a wide selection of laptops designed to handle various tasks, from work to play. The IdeaPad Pro 5 14″ Gen 9 (14AHP9) is no exception. It’s powered by 45W Zen 4 Hawk Point-HS processors and you can also opt for an optional 6GB GeForce RTX 3050. When you add the great 2.8K OLED panel to the mix, you get a capable and light machine for office or content creation tasks. Not bad for a sub-16 mm device.
Of course, this one is also light and that’s why the upgradability is almost non-existent. You can replace the Wi-Fi card or the 2242 NVMe drive. Yep, that’s all, the memory is soldered. Contrary to that, the port selection is modern and it includes four USB connectors.
Most of the extras aren’t optional which is good news for all users. Goodies such as an IR Web camera, a backlit keyboard, a big 84Wh battery, an OLED panel, and a self-healing BIOS are standard features.

What’s in the box?
Inside the box, we found a pair of manuals and the laptop itself. Depending on the configuration, you get a 100W or 140W USB Type-C charger. The Lenovo WL310 Bluetooth Silent Mouse is an optional accessory.
Design and construction
The IdeaPad Pro 5 14 Gen 9 (14AHP9) boasts the well-known Lenovo design – a slightly boxy shape with rounded edges and a protrusion on the lid for easier opening. The aluminum build is solid. You can twist the lid but only just and the base could be bent a bit in the zone between the touchpad and the Space key but this can be observed if you apply a lot of pressure on purpose.
The lid easily opens with a single hand and you can feel that the hinge mechanism is as smooth as possible. This machine stops the scales at 1.46 kg and the profile thickness is 15.99 mm.
We like what we are seeing – thin bezels around the OLED panel.
The “hump” on the top houses a 1080p IR Web camera for Windows Hello. The unit sports a privacy shutter.
This device can lay almost fully flat on an even surface.
The comfortable keyboard is surrounded by two tall speaker grills. The board itself has a backlight, large keycaps, and a Copilot key. The key travel and the feedback are on point for such a thin profile. The “Up” and “Down” keys are reduced in size which makes them hard-to-hit.
The glass touchpad is big (75 x 120 mm), smooth, and offers accurate tracking. The noisy clicks are the only con here.
Flip the laptop upside down and you’ll spot three rubber feet (which aren’t grippy at all) and a two-row ventilation grill. The heat is being exhausted through a pair of vents on the back. They aim at the hinge cover so a bit of hot air reaches the display during heavy CPU loads.
Ports
On the left, there is an HDMI 2.1 for up to 4K 60Hz external displays, a 10 Gbps USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 2) port, and a 40 Gbps USB4 port. The right side houses two 5 Gbps USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports (the former supports the Always On function), an SD card reader, and an Audio combo jack. Both Type-Cs support PowerDelivery 3.0 and DisplayPort 1.4.

Color Coverage
The whole “sail-shaped” map below (Fig. 1) consists of all the colors we can see, while the black crooked line shows all the colors from real-world scenes and nature around us.

Brightness and Contrast
The maximum brightness in HDR mode is 641 cd/m² at 8% white fill and 427 cd/m² on a full white screen.
The maximum brightness in SDR mode is 405 cd/m² in the center of the screen and 403 cd/m² averaged across the surface with a maximum deviation of 2%.
The Correlated Color Temperature (CCT) on a white screen at maximum brightness is 6440K.
The contrast ratio of OLED panels is excellent because the pixels turn off completely when displaying black.
Uniformity: Luminance, Contrast, and Color Deviation
The figure below shows the results from our uniformity test across different sections of the screen. It’s measured at 182 nits (Windows slider = 70%) — a brightness level we consider typical for standard working conditions.
DeltaE values below 4.0 are acceptable for regular users. For those working with colors, screens with DeltaE values no higher than 2.0 are recommended.
Color Accuracy
Let’s check the difference between real colors and those you’ll see on the Lenovo IdeaPad Pro 5 14″ Gen 9 (14AHP9). We measure that distance in DeltaE – the higher the number, the more different they look.
Values below 4.0 are acceptable for regular users, while values below 2.0 are suitable for color-sensitive work. A value below 1.0 means the difference is indistinguishable to the naked eye.
For the next graph, we’ve selected 24 common colors, including dark/light skin, blue sky, green grass, etc.
Before our calibration of the Lenovo IdeaPad Pro 5 14″ Gen 9 (14AHP9), the Average color accuracy was 2.2 dE (Fig. 2), and with our Design and Gaming profile, it lowered to 1.8 dE (Fig. 3).

Visibility in dark scenes
Have you ever watched a movie with dark scenes where you could barely see anything? This often happens because many display panels struggle to differentiate the darkest nuances, making them appear the same.
The next figure illustrates how well the display reproduces these dark nuances. The left side of the image shows the display with stock settings, and the right side shows it with our Design and Gaming profile activated.
On the horizontal axis are the grayscale levels, and on the vertical axis – the corresponding display brightness.
You can also check how your display handles the darkest nuances but keep in mind that this also depends on the settings of your current display and the surrounding light conditions.
Health Impact: PWM (Screen flickering)
Some use PWM to regulate their brightness, which means that instead of reducing the light intensity, they pulse or flicker. Our brain merges the image, so it appears darker, but this strains both it and our vision, especially when the frequency of the pulses is low. In the graph below, you see the intensity of light at different brightness levels—on the vertical axis is the brightness of the emitted light, and on the horizontal axis—time.
The luminance of the Lenovo IdeaPad Pro 5 14″ Gen 9 (14AHP9) display is controlled with PWM only up to about 65 cd/m², above which we detect pulses with limited amplitude. This makes it relatively comfortable for prolonged work in terms of flicker.
Health Impact: Blue light emissions
Installing our Health-Guard profile reduces harmful Blue Light emissions while keeping the colors of the screen perceptually accurate.

Health Impact: Screen Reflectance
Glossy-coated displays can cause eye fatigue in high ambient light conditions due to reflections. We measure the level of screen reflection with the display turned off, at a 60° angle.
The reflectance of the Lenovo’s screen is 170 GU.

Sound
The IdeaPad Pro 5’s speakers are of very good quality, with Dolby Atmos support. The low, mid, and high frequencies are clear.
Performance: CPU, GPU, Storage
All benchmarks and tests were conducted with the “Best performance” preset applied in the Windows “Power & Battery” menu. Also, the “Performance” preset is selected in the Lenovo Vantage app and the “UMA Frame Buffer Size” is set to 4GB in the BIOS.
The “Maximum Memory Data Clock Speed” in the BIOS is set to 7500MT/s.

The SSD of our device is a 512GB WD PC SN740 SDDPMQD-512G-1101. It reaches 71°C during benchmarking which is a pretty good score since there are no dedicated thermal pads for this NVMe drive.

Temperatures and comfort, Battery Life
Max CPU load
In this test we use 100% on the CPU cores, monitoring their frequencies and chip temperature. The first column shows a computer’s reaction to a short load (2-10 seconds), the second column simulates a serious task (between 15 and 30 seconds), and the third column is a good indicator of how good the laptop is for long loads such as video rendering.

The Ryzen 7 8845HS can sustain ~4.20 GHz in short loads and 4.00 GHz in medium and long stress. That’s a respectable result for a 14-incher with such a powerful CPU.
Comfort during full load
During heavy loads in “Performance” mode, the two fans aren’t noisy.
Also, the keyboard is pleasantly cool, reaching just 42°C.
The Auto mode is doing its job well nearing 4.00 GHz in heavy stress, just like the “Performance” preset.
Battery
Now, we conduct the battery tests with the Windows Best Power Efficiency setting turned on, screen brightness adjusted to 180 nits and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with. The 84Wh battery pack lasts for around 9 hours of video playback. To achieve that, you have to apply the “Best Power Efficiency” preset in the Windows “Power & Battery” menu and select the “Battery Saver” mode in the Lenovo Vantage app.
Brightness: 180 nits; Display Mode: SDR

Disassembly, Upgrade options, and Maintenance
To open this small device, you have to undo just six Torx-head screws. Use a lever tool to pop the back behind the hinge cover in the areas close to the top two edges. Pry the sides and the front, the rear should be last.
The bottom plate houses preinstalled cooling pads for the SSD and one big SMD power inductor on the motherboard.
This notebook has an 84Wh battery. To take it out, unplug the connector from the mainboard and undo the 3 Phillips-head screws that secure the unit in place. The capacity is enough for around 9 hours of video playback.
Unfortunately, the memory is soldered. Still, you get up to 32GB of LPDDR5x-6400MHz memory in dual-channel mode which seems plenty. There is just one M.2 slot compatible with 2242 Gen 4 SSDs. Interestingly, the NVMe drive isn’t additionally cooled by a thermal pad. The Wi-Fi card is below the left fan.
The thermal system comprises two large fans, a pair of long heat pipes, two top-mounted heat sinks, and a big heat spreader.
Verdict
The Lenovo IdeaPad Pro 5 14″ Gen 9 (14AHP9) is a solid portable device. The keyboard and touchpad combo is spot on, especially in this price category. The comfort under max loads is good – the fans aren’t noisy and the keyboard barely gets warm.
The 2.8K OLED 120Hz display (LEN140WQ+ (LEN8ABA)) is the main event. It offers full sRGB and DCI-P3 coverage, 405 cd/m² max brightness in SDR mode, and an infinite contrast ratio. The PWM usage seems the only downside of this screen but above 65 cd/m² the pulsations are with limited amplitude which makes the panel comfortable for long hours of work.
The performance is on point. The Ryzen 7 8845HS can sustain around 4.00 GHz during max loads in “Performance” or “Auto” mode. That’s pretty good for a 14-inch notebook considering that the base clock of this chip is 3.8 GHz. The battery life is long (~9 hours of videos) and that’s a nice surprise given the punchy 45W processor and the high-res OLED display.
The IdeaPad Pro 5 14 is a great offer in its class. It boasts snappy performance, an impressive OLED display, good port selection, and adequate comfort under full processor stress.
