Lenovo ThinkBook 13x Gen 2 review – portability is king

Verdict

The ThinkBook 13x Gen 2 may be many things, but one feature that it will be remembered for is its portability. It is so thin, in fact, that it looks like a toy. However, the shallow profile is not the only impressive feature of this device. Our configuration was bundled with a wireless charger, which works together with the contact points on the bottom of the device.

Once again, this is not a truly wireless charger, since the laptop needs to make contact with the actual pad. However, the big benefit, especially in this machine, is the freedom of all ports. All… two of them. At least they are Thunderbolt fours. And this leaves you space for the USB Type-C to HDMI and USB Type-A dongle. It is styled in the same way as the laptop.

Lenovo ThinkBook 13x Gen 2’s touchscreen IPS panel has a WQXGA resolution, comfortable viewing angles, and a good contrast ratio. Its 16:10 aspect ratio is really useful for data analysis and coding, while the 97% sRGB color coverage ensures a fantastic image.

Our Gaming and Web design profile further enhances the experience. But not by making the colors more vibrant, but instead by bringing them as close as possible to the sRGB standards. In this case, we experience a really good match, resulting in an Average dE of 0.8. Thankfully, the display doesn’t use PWM for brightness adjustment, which also makes it comfortable and safe for long periods of use.

Unfortunately, the memory situation is not very pleasant for people who like to upgrade their devices. Not that you should have carried any expectations. After all, the overall thickness of the ThinkBook 13x Gen 2 is pretty much the same as the SODIMM interface.

We are also a bit perplexed by the battery life. During video playback, the notebook lasted for 9 hours straight, while browsing the Web drained the battery for no more than 6 hours and 30 minutes. Without a question, this is not an ideal performance.

Speaking of performance, the hardware works really well with the two-fan cooling solution. It never heats up, and it maintains its clock speeds for long periods of time. What we noticed, however, is that the CPU frequency does not boost very high at the beginning. Yet again, the core count of the processors, offered with this product pretty much makes for it.

Now, let’s talk about features. Your privacy will be intact, thanks to the fingerprint reader, the IR face recognition scanner and the privacy shutter on the camera. Furthermore, you can take advantage of the “Zero touch login”, which automatically wakes your computer and logs you in as soon as fall within reach of the sensor.

See, this is a special product. It is not for everyone. Some people like future expandability, others need more ports natively. However, if you’re into portability, it can hardly get any better than that.
