Lenovo ThinkPad L13 Yoga Gen 4 (Intel) review – transformer with color-accurate display and near-silent cooling fan

Design and construction

The Lenovo ThinkPad L13 Yoga Gen 4 (Intel) looks almost identical to its predecessor. This means that you get an aluminum lid and a body made of glass fiber-reinforced polymer. The base isn’t stable at all. Even the lid wobbles during typing. The whole zone around the keyboard can be flexed as well as the two palm rest areas. On the bright side, the laptop is light – the starting weight is just 1.32 kilos. The profile thickness is 17.06 mm.

The lid is much more solid than the base but can’t be opened with a single hand.

The bezels around the glass-covered display are thick which is quite unusual for a modern business notebook.

The top bezel houses a 720p Web camera with a privacy shutter. You can opt for a 1080p model or an IR unit with the same resolution.

The lid acts as a lever – when the angle of the opening is a bit wider than 90 degrees, the lower side of the lid with its two small rubber feet raises the back of the laptop. This enhances the cooling capabilities of the notebook and the ergonomics during typing.

The spill-resistant keyboard is comfortable for work thanks to the large keycaps with a long travel and clicky feedback. Expectedly, there is no NumPad here and unfortunately, the backlight is optional. The Arrow keys aren’t too small but the “PgUp” and “PgDown” keys are positioned too close to them and that’s not an optional solution. The TrackPoint is placed in the middle of the keyboard and it works together with the three physical buttons above the touchpad. The latter has a smooth Mylar surface and the accuracy is on point. The Lenovo Pen is a joy to use with the touch display. The stylus glides with ease and it’s very responsive.

No surprises on the bottom plate – three rubber feet, two speaker cutouts, and a ventilation grill. The hot air is pushed through a vent on the back of the device. Some amount of heat reaches the display during heavy CPU loads.

Ports

On the left, there is a Nano-SIM card slot (option), a Thunderbolt 4 / USB4 40Gbps connector, a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, and an Audio combo jack. The right houses a Kensington Nano Security Slot, a USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 2) port, a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port with an Always On function, an HDMI 2.1 connector for up to 4K 60Hz external displays, and a slot for the optional Lenovo Integrated Pen. Both Type-C ports support data transfer, Power Delivery 3.0 and DisplayPort 1.4. The optional Smart Card reader is on the front side.
