MSI Cyborg 15 (A12V) review – there is so much power in its tiny 45W GPU

Verdict

At the beginning of this review, we questioned MSI’s claims that this laptop is going to be groundbreaking and impressive. To be fair, the notebook is pretty good for what it is. The 45W RTX 4050 really can’t hold a candle to the 85W one of the MSI Katana 15. However, it is pretty good at games, and at this moment in time, when laptops with RTX 4000 are still young, the Cyborg 15 (A12V) does seem like a good purchase.

MSI Cyborg 15 (A12V)’s IPS panel has a Full HD resolution, comfortable viewing angles, and a good contrast ratio. It doesn’t use PWM for brightness adjustment, but unfortunately, it covers only 54% of the sRGB color gamut. Also, its pixel response time is a bit slow, which doesn’t bode well with the fast refresh rate of 144Hz.

Unfortunately, the battery life is not stellar. We got about 5 hours of Web browsing, or 4 hours and 30 minutes of video playback. After all, this is 2023 and gaming laptops are no longer sick of the limited battery life disease.

On the bright side, the laptop offers two SODIMM slots for memory expansion. They fit DDR5 RAM and work at 4800MHz, which is okay. And for storage, there is one M.2 PCIe x4 slot. Ideally, we would have wanted a second M.2 slot, but at least this one supports Gen 4 SSDs.

In terms of the ports, you get a decent selection, but we miss the SD card slot and a Thunderbolt 4 connector.

So what can we get from all of this? Well, the laptop is pretty easy to cool, but the insulation to the base is a bit lackluster, which lets heat bleed into the keyboard. Also, there are some small compromises, but the overall experience of using this notebook is positive.
