Dell SE2723DS monitor – Specs, Pros / Cons: See How We Make This Monitor Almost 3 Times More Accurate!

Dell has SOOOO MANY 27-inch office monitors that it’s hard to keep track of all of them. Today, we have the Dell SE2723DS, which uses a Quad HD IPS panel. It’s mainly aimed at office work, however, it still offers FreeSync Support as well as a higher 75Hz refresh rate, so some gaming will definitely be in the picture.

Still, the main use case for it is standard office work, which is where our Display Profiles come in. Each is tailored to a specific use, be it Design, Office Work, Gaming, Entertainment, and even your Health. Today we’re putting more focus on the Dell SE2723DS’s Creative endeavors by measuring its color coverage, and accuracy and seeing how much improvement our profiles can bring.

Design and Connectivity

As with most Dell monitors, the SE2723DS is as sleek as it gets. It’s got a black plastic finish with a decent design. The stand offers both Height Adjustment and Tilt, so you can get the best position for you, leveling the display with your eyes. There are a few buttons, on the bottom, to access and tinker with the OSD menu, as well as a status LED. On the back, there are VESA mounting points for a wall or a desk mount, with which you can achieve the absolute best level of adjustment.

In terms of ports, this monitor brings two HDMI 1.4 ports, a single DisplayPort 1.2 port, and an audio jack for plugging in your headphones or external speakers.

Display quality, Buy our profiles, Verdict

The Dell SE2723DS doesn’t bring any special features like HDR or whatever. However, it does a great job of being just a good screen that both covers a lot of colors, but also because these colors are very accurate. You can check out what we’re talking about below, where we spill all the tea about color gamuts, and what each represents.

The correlated color temperature on a white screen after a Factory Reset in sRGB mode is 6700K (Luminance 150 cd/m2 at 20% Brightness). The average gamma value is 2.18.

Color coverage

Here’s an illustration (Fig. 1). The whole “sail-shaped” map below consists of all the colors we can see, while the black crooked line shows all the colors from real-world scenes and nature around us.

Then, we’ve drawn some of the most important and interesting color spaces, compared to the colors the panel of Dell SE2723DS can show:

Standard/For Web: sRGB – widely used color space for most consumer devices, ideal for Web design and development
For Print: AdobeRGB – used in professional photo editing, graphic design, and print
For Photographers/Video Editors: DCI-P3 – used in high-end film production, post-production, and digital cinema
Premium HDR: Rec.2020 – the widest consumer ITU color standard, covering a massive 75.8% of the visible spectrum, a benchmark for premium HDR content

Dell SE2723DS: the yellow dashed triangle (– – – – – –) represents the range of colors this monitor can display. In our tests, we calculated the total color coverage of the monitor at 94% of the sRGB color gamut.

(Fig.1) Dell SE2723DS covers 94% of the Web colors (sRGB)

This means that if the Dell SE2723DS tries to show any color outside of its triangle, it will show the closest color to it that’s inside the triangle.

Color accuracy

Now let’s see how big is the difference between the real colors and the one you’ll see on the Dell SE2723DS. We measure that distance in DeltaE – the bigger the number, the more different they look.

For the next illustration, we’ve chosen 24 common colors like dark and light skin, blue sky, green grass, etc.

Values below 2.0 are considered suitable for color-sensitive work. Before our calibration of the Dell SE2723DS, the Average color accuracy was 4.5 dE (Fig. 2), and with our Web Design and Office Work profile, it lowered to 1.6 dE (Fig. 3). This is an increase of 2.8x, which is a lot. Paired with the coverage of almost the entire sRGB color gamut, this monitor is perfect for design work.

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom-tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate (they may seem strange at first but after a few minutes our brain will start recognizing them as accurate ones – that’s how Health-Guard differs from alternatives like f.lux).

Pro Tip: As the Health-Guard profile simulates paper and has as accurate as possible colors, it could be a great tool for prepress designers!

Gaming and Movies

We also have a third Gaming and Movies profile, which regulates the black colors, making dark areas in games and movies appear more visible, thus giving you a better viewing experience. Shooting at your opponent first can be a make-or-break moment, so make sure you’re best prepared with our profile.

Office Work

Office Work should be used mostly by users who spend most of the time looking at pieces of text, tables or just surfing. This profile aims to deliver better distinctness and clarity by keeping a flat gamma curve (2.20), native color temperature and perceptually accurate colors.

Design and Gaming

This profile is aimed at designers who work with colors professionally, and for games and movies as well. Design and Gaming takes display panels to their limits, making them as accurate as possible in the sRGB IEC61966-2-1 standard for Web and HDTV, at white point D65.

Health-Guard

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate. Health-Guard simulates paper so the pressure on the eyes is greatly reduced.

Verdict

The Dell SE2723DS won’t charge you a lot of money for its services, while the stuff that it offers is more than great for a designer. The QHD resolution over a 27-inch panel brings a detailed image that is super punchy and colorful, thanks to the 94% sRGB coverage. The colors are not only great for doing design work, but they also make games and movies look beautiful. And while this monitor isn’t as quick as dedicated gaming machines, you’ve still got a 75Hz refresh rate and FreeSync Support, so you can do plenty of casual gaming that’s going to be smooth and tear-free.

Regardless of what you decide to do with the monitor, our profiles can improve every aspect of it. With the Web Design and Office Work profile, we make the monitor 2.8 times more accurate, with a dE value of 1.6, which makes it perfectly usable for all types of design and color grading. Next is the Gaming and Movies profile, which works really well for darker scenes and environments, so you see what’s actually on your monitor. Lastly, the Health Guard gives you the feel of paper when you’re looking at the screen, as well as protects your eyes from PWM (Flickering) and reduces the Blue Light coming off, which can be very tiring for your eyes.
