Display Profiles for Samsung Odyssey G9 C49G95TSSP – Sci-Fi Movies Dream of Having Something Like This

The most expensive monitor that we’ve touched so far, the Samsung Odyssey G9 C49G95TSSP is a crazy what-if scenario. The device essentially is two monitors combined into one, with an added curve, so you can better experience all of those pixels. It’s the ultimate workstation monitor, however, it also comes with insane gaming capabilities. The thing with these ultra-wide monitors is that they are super immersive, especially with the added curve.

This means that in games, you can see much more of your environment and be totally in the zone when playing. It’s great for productivity too, as you can position all of your apps so everything’s in sight and accessible. Especially when you’re editing videos, you can set up the longest timeline ever, giving you a complete view of your project. Today we’re seeing just how good the Samsung Odyssey G9 is, and how much better we can make it using our display profiles.

Spoiler: With our profiles, the Color Accuracy improves by 1.7 times, making the monitor nearly suitable for professional work… and more than adequate for gamers.

What’s in the box? Assembly

The box brings the monitor and stand itself, as well as a power cable and two other cables (a USB Downstream and a DisplayPort cable). As for the assembly process, you can use a screwdriver to secure the stand to the back of the monitor, however, get another person to help you, as the monitor is both heavy and pretty large, and setting it out of the box once the stand is installed will be a tad more difficult than your standard 16:9 monitor.

Drivers and Software

There’s plenty of software to download including the drivers, the Easy Setting Box, as well as firmware updates, which you can install using the USB port. To download all of these, you can go to Samsung’s Support page.

Design and Connectivity

The monitor has a unique design, with an entirely white backside, while looking at the front, you see black plastic. The monitor’s curve is quite something, but according to Samsung, the 1000R curve matches the curvature of the human eye, so the immersion is in full effect. Now what does the R mean? The number before it is more important, but to keep it simple, a 1000R means that if the monitor continued expanding, it would create a perfect circle within a radius of 1000mm. Basically, the lower the number, the more pronounced the curve is. It really is a thing of beauty, however, moving it is a hassle. Due to its sheer size, the movement of the stand doesn’t include a Pivot function, however, you can still adjust the height for the best ergonomics possible.

In terms of ports, the monitor includes two DisplayPorts, one HMDI port, three USB 3.0 ports (one is a downstream port used for connecting the two left to the PC), and an audio jack.

Display quality, Buy our profiles, Verdict

This is a premium monitor with a very wide 49-inch VA display with a QLED backlight. The 240Hz refresh rate is very high, so esports players and high-elo streamers can enjoy countless hours of shooters and MOBA games. The response times are also really low, with the G9 promising 1ms in the Grey to Grey test. The monitor also includes FreeSync and G-Sync support so no screen tearing in case of sudden fps drops, as the monitor will automatically match the refresh rate to the FPS of the game you’re playing. VA panels also come with higher contrast, so everything seems to pop more on the screen, especially with black and darker colors, which appear deeper and more saturated.

The correlated color temperature on a white screen after a Factory Reset in sRGB mode is 6500K (Luminance 150 cd/m2 at 20% Brightness). The average gamma value is 2.27.

Color coverage

Here’s an illustration (Fig. 1). The whole “sail-shaped” map below consists of all the colors we can see, while the black crooked line shows all the colors from real-world scenes and nature around us.

Then, we’ve drawn some of the most important and interesting color spaces, compared to the colors the panel of Samsung Odyssey G9 C49G95TSSP can show:

Standard/For Web: sRGB – widely used color space for most consumer devices, ideal for Web design and development
For Print: AdobeRGB – used in professional photo editing, graphic design, and print
For Photographers/Video Editors: DCI-P3 – used in high-end film production, post-production, and digital cinema
Premium HDR: Rec.2020 – the widest consumer ITU color standard, covering a massive 75.8% of the visible spectrum, a benchmark for premium HDR content

Samsung Odyssey G9 C49G95TSSP: the yellow dashed triangle (– – – – – –) represents the range of colors this monitor can display. In our tests, we calculated the total color coverage of the monitor at 99% of the sRGB color gamut, as well as 94% of the DCI-P3 color gamut.

(Fig.1)Samsung Odyssey G9 C49G95TSSP covers 99% of the Web colors (sRGB)

This means that if the Samsung Odyssey G9 C49G95TSSP tries to show any color outside of its triangle, it will show the closest color to it that’s inside the triangle.

Color accuracy

Now let’s see how big is the difference between the real colors and the one you’ll see on the Samsung Odyssey G9 C49G95TSSP. We measure that distance in DeltaE – the bigger the number, the more different they look.

For the next illustration, we’ve chosen 24 common colors like dark and light skin, blue sky, green grass, etc.

Values below 2.0 are considered suitable for color-sensitive work. Before our calibration of the Samsung Odyssey G9 C49G95TSSP, the Average color accuracy was 4.1 dE (Fig. 2), and with our Web Design and Office Work profile, it lowered to 2.4 dE (Fig. 3). While this is significant (1.7x increase in accuracy), it’s still not suitable for professional designers, as we don’t reach a value below 2, the so-called entry point for a panel to be considered accurate for color sensitive work.

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom-tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate (they may seem strange at first but after a few minutes our brain will start recognizing them as accurate ones – that’s how Health-Guard differs from alternatives like f.lux).

Pro Tip: As the Health-Guard profile simulates paper and has as accurate as possible colors, it could be a great tool for prepress designers!

Gaming and Movies

We also have a third Gaming and Movies profile, which regulates the black colors, making dark areas in games and movies appear more visible, thus giving you a better viewing experience. Shooting at your opponent first can be a make-or-break moment, so make sure you’re best prepared with our profile.

Office Work

Office Work should be used mostly by users who spend most of the time looking at pieces of text, tables or just surfing. This profile aims to deliver better distinctness and clarity by keeping a flat gamma curve (2.20), native color temperature and perceptually accurate colors.

Design and Gaming

This profile is aimed at designers who work with colors professionally, and for games and movies as well. Design and Gaming takes display panels to their limits, making them as accurate as possible in the sRGB IEC61966-2-1 standard for Web and HDTV, at white point D65.

Health-Guard

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate. Health-Guard simulates paper so the pressure on the eyes is greatly reduced.

Verdict

The Samsung Odyssey G9 C49G95TSSP is a fantastic piece of technology, however, it’s also stupidly expensive. Its gaming and productivity prowess cannot be questioned, however, the color accuracy isn’t exactly the best. Still, you’ll be able to use it plenty for optimizing your workflow and enjoying some of the best multitasking possible, as the curved screen and its dimensions make it so you have two 1440p 25-inch monitors bunched up together, without an annoying bezel in the middle. With all of that screen space, you can do whatever you want.

Enjoying games is better than ever, thanks to the curve and the immersion that it brings. Movies and shows also look incredible, thanks to the QLED backlighting and the higher contrast that the VA panel provides.

Our profiles can further improve the gaming and movie-watching experience, as the Gaming and Movies one regulates the black colors, further helping scenes become easier to see and distinguish. This is also helpful in games, as you can spot enemies, even if they’re hiding in the shadows. Also, the enhancement in Color Accuracy by 1.7 times through our profiles transforms the Odyssey G9 into a highly capable device in that aspect too.

The Office Work profile is a must-have for those dealing with spreadsheets and text, optimizing the display for efficiency and clarity. Lastly, the Health-Guard profile is an invaluable addition, offering significant benefits for eye health, especially for prolonged use.

Installing the profiles is super easy using our LM Profiles 2.0 app. You drag & drop the profiles into the app itself and after that, you can simply switch between them depending on what you’re doing.
