Display Profiles for the Dell G3223Q – Is This the Perfect Monitor for Designers?

The Dell G2332Q is one of the more expensive monitors to pass through our lab, with a retail price of $600. Now do you get enough for the money? Today we’ll certainly touch on that subject, but we’ll also put some major focus on our Display Profiles and how much they improve the user experience, making the monitor a staple piece for any creator, with amazing color coverage and accuracy that you can check out further in this article.

Today’s gaming monitor brings a super crisp 4K Ultra HD resolution IPS panel, which looks spectacular on the 32-inch diagonal. For the gamers who have the 4090s and 4080s already inside their gaming stations, a 144Hz refresh rate and a 1ms response time will make sure every game runs smoothly and responsive even at this high resolution. The display also brings support for both FreeSync Premium Pro as well as NVIDIA G-Sync, so you really get a premium gaming experience, as someone would assume at this price point.

As for our profiles, the big news here is that G3223Q reaches DeltaE = 0.9, which means that once “Design and Gaming” is activated, the colors of this monitor become indistinguishable from the real ones!

Assembly, What’s in the box?

The richer port selection is reflected in the box’s contents, as you get both power cables, USB cables, and an HDMI cable. As for the assembly, it’s super simple, even a kid could do it. You don’t need any screws as everything can be either hand-tightened or snaps into place, which means you’re ready to go.

Drivers and Software

You can find all downloadable content on the monitor’s Support Page. This includes the drivers as well as the Dell Display Manager, which allows you to better utilize all the available screen space, by creating layouts for how all apps are presented. This can be helpful for multitasking, however, Windows 10 and 11 already have a similar feature, so it’s up to you if you want the additional software installed.

Design and Connectivity

Similar to the other Dell G3223D that we had previously, the Q-variant comes with the same gunmetal grey finish on the back and the base. The thin bezels and the thicker chin are the same too. Around the back, we can see the LED component, which lights up in bright blue, fulfilling the “gamer” aesthetic in a smart way, as we don’t have a bunch of weird plasticky bits or tons of red.

The stand on the G3223Q is also incredibly agile, having both swivel and tilt functions while being height adjustable as well. This gives you a lot of flexibility to move around the screen however you like. If you want the most possible adjustment, you might want to look into a VESA mount for your wall or your desk, as with it you can seriously make a superb setup for content creation.

In terms of connectivity, the monitor has a lot of ports, including two HDMI 2.1 ports, a single DisplayPort 1.4 port, three USB 3.2 Gen. 1 ports, with two Downstream and one Upstream, as well as a single audio jack. The Upstream port should be connected to your PC or Laptop, while the Downstream ports are used for actually plugging components into your setup.

Display quality, Buy our profiles, Verdict

As this is a flagship monitor, it has some flagship characteristics, like the deep 4K Ultra HD resolution, and the ample color coverage that you can check out below. In terms of gaming capabilities, with a 144Hz refresh rate, a 1ms response time, and the appearance of both FreeSync Premium Pro and G-Sync, this is a monitor for both esports professionals as well as avid gamers with the setup required to power this beast.

Color coverage

Here’s an illustration (Fig. 1). The whole “sail-shaped” map below consists of all the colors we can see, while the black crooked line shows all the colors from real-world scenes and nature around us.

Then, we’ve drawn some of the most important and interesting color spaces, compared to the colors the panel of Dell G3223Q can show:

Standard/For Web: sRGB – widely used color space for most consumer devices, ideal for Web design and development
For Print: AdobeRGB – used in professional graphic design, and print
For Photographers/Video Editors: DCI-P3 – used in high-end film production, and digital cinema, and photo editing
Premium HDR: Rec.2020 – the widest consumer ITU color standard, covering a massive 75.8% of the visible spectrum, a benchmark for premium HDR content

Dell G3223Q: the yellow dashed triangle (– – – – – –) represents the range of colors this monitor can display. In our tests, we calculated the total color coverage of the monitor at 100% of the sRGB gamut, and 95% of the DCI-P3 gamut.

(Fig.1)Dell G3223Q covers 100% of the Web colors (sRGB)

This means that if the Dell G3223Q  tries to show any color outside of its triangle, it will show the closest color to it that’s inside the triangle.

Color accuracy

Now let’s see how big is the difference between the real colors and the one you’ll see on the Dell G3223Q. We measure that distance in DeltaE – the bigger the number, the more different they look.

For the next illustration, we’ve chosen 24 common colors like dark and light skin, blue sky, green grass, etc.

Values below 2.0 are considered suitable for color-sensitive work. Before our calibration of Dell G3223Q, the Average color accuracy was 3.2 dE (Fig. 2), and with our Web Design and Office Work profile, it lowers to 0.9 dE (Fig. 3), which is a 3.5x increase in accuracy. With a dE value of 0.9, you get a professional level of color accuracy. Also, since values below 1.0 are indistinguishable by the human, you basically get the most accurate colors possible.

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom-tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate (they may seem strange at first but after a few minutes our brain will start recognizing them as accurate ones – that’s how Health-Guard differs from alternatives like f.lux).

Pro Tip: As the Health-Guard profile simulates paper and has as accurate as possible colors, it could be a great tool for prepress designers!

Gaming and Movies

We also have a third Gaming and Movies profile, which regulates the black colors, making dark areas in games and movies appear more visible, thus giving you a better viewing experience. Shooting at your opponent first can be a make-or-break moment, so make sure you’re best prepared with our profile.

Office Work

Office Work should be used mostly by users who spend most of the time looking at pieces of text, tables or just surfing. This profile aims to deliver better distinctness and clarity by keeping a flat gamma curve (2.20), native color temperature and perceptually accurate colors.

Design and Gaming

This profile is aimed at designers who work with colors professionally, and for games and movies as well. Design and Gaming takes display panels to their limits, making them as accurate as possible in the sRGB IEC61966-2-1 standard for Web and HDTV, at white point D65.

Health-Guard

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate. Health-Guard simulates paper so the pressure on the eyes is greatly reduced.

Verdict

The Dell G3223Q might be the monitor you’re looking for if you need extreme detail and a large canvas for your games and Creative endeavors. The 4K resolution means that you can edit videos and photos and look for the slightest imperfections, especially with the color accuracy being as good as it is, thanks to our Display Profiles. A dE value of 0.9 essentially means that colors are as true to life as possible, and with the wide color coverage that spans almost the entire DCI-P3 gamut, you get a superb screen for video editing, color grading, and graphic design.

As for gaming, with FreeSync Premium Pro, you get HDR support unlike any other. The monitor and your PC share data directly with no intermediate interfaces, which means that you get much lower input lag, something very important for gaming. The panel is also VESA HDR 600 certified, so you get local dimming and real-time contrast ratios, as well as the increased color gamut. Overall, this is one of the best monitors on the market, especially once you consider the functionality of the stand and the port selection. For gaming and entertainment enthusiasts as well as professional content creators, you can’t go wrong with the Dell G3223Q.
